How am I supposed to take this?

Yesterday a homeless guy comes in, wants to see if I have any work he can do for food. I told him no, but I'd feed him. I gave him a cup of chili, a pulled pork sandwich with french fries. While he was about halfway through, I had our cook fix him a brisket sandwich for him to take. he finished, got up and started to walk out the door, the waitress said, to him, you forgot your brisket sandwich, he said, naah, I don't want it. True story! So homeless folks either don't like my food or a sandwich is too much to lug around till your hungry again. No thank you's from him either! Go figure!

Good question. Did he finish the food you gave him?

I would imagine it's more about not having anywhere to put it before it spoils than anything else. But then I try to always think the best about people no matter how many times it bites me in the butt. He could've at least said thank you, though.

Sometimes people are homeless because something is not right upstairs.
    Prime example.

Mar is right. However, if you gave me a brisket sandwich, I would gladly take it, along with a hearty thank you! You were kind in feeding him.I applaud you.

Sometime people are homeless because that's the choice they make. I have stopped by people standing on the corner with a "Feel sorry for me-i'm homeless" sign and offered them a job, chance to learn a trade, a days pay for a days work. They quickly told me "No thanks" and tried to shoo me away as I was apparently slowing down the flow of money that was coming in, with minimal effort.

The only person that took my offer to help, had "Homeless Vet, need work" on his sign. He thanked me every day, was a really hard and smart worker. Within a year he moved out of the shelter, was sober and had his own apartment. He eventually went on to another company and is now in mid level management.

Some people genuinely DO need a hand, but most just want a handout and for you to feel sorry for them. I have learned to distinguish the difference between the 2 in less than a minute, with a few quick questions.

My brother hired a temporary vacuum repairman.  When the person he was replacing was coming back to work, my brother asked him for his phone number (pre- cell phone days) and address.

He answered...  I live on the streets.  My brother said.... what street as he didn't understand the answer.

This guy lived on the streets by choice but worked real jobs when he could get them.  He explained that he loved the freedom of living on the streets and it was his choice.

I'm not sure that qualifies him as normal, but he actually was.

that was great of you.    But, the guy might put the word out, you are good for free food.    ... I would not put him or them to work in the kitchen or dinning rm, but maybe ask them to pickup & sweep the parking lot or wash your car/truck.    ... If he prove to be reliable there might be other options.  pay them as temp contractor in cash or food  ... workman's comp problem if they were accident prone.

You're very kind CTF! Ed has a good point, though, as does Marlene. Some homeless are mentally ill. If he comes in again I think Ed's idea of giving him a simple chore might be a good idea.

My guess is that he didn't have any place to put it. On the streets means, no home base, nowhere to put stuff. In the stomach, or nowhere.

Does your area have a soup kitchen? If he shows up again, I'd send him there.
Some soup kitchens have a pick up service that picks up good unserved food from restaurants. Might be a place that you can help.
