How did you find Roadfood ? Thu, 03/2/06 12:10 AM (permalink)
I am curious. A year ago when I switched from Comcast Cable to SBC Yahoo DSL Pro (half price, not much slower) Roadfood Restaurant reviews was already there on the home page between the New York Times and AP: Sports, I don't know how or why it was there but I got used to clicking on the daily review and since it always included what I call food porn I looked forward to it. I can't believe it took me a year to look into what the site was all about. What's your story ?

I don't know how I got to the site, when googling, but my ultimate goal when I found RF, was to find a specific brand named hot dog. Hoping that someone knew where to find them, but alas, they are no longer produced thanks to TYSON, the corporate giant sucking up the company that made them, and then discontinuing them!
    Boo Hoo...
    Glad I did find RF!!!

I don't even think there was a Google when I happened upon the site.

Because I spend so much time on the road -- and had a pre-disposition against corporate food -- the searching I did do got me here and I made sure to remember it.

I've been reading Stearn's restaurant reviews since the early 80's when they contributed to the Hartford Courant.

I don't remember but I'm sure lutefish and Zima were involved! I was probably searching for info on their books.

Read an Esquire magazine excerpt of the first book in 1978 while working in Mexico. Hit a few of the highlighted places while driving back to the East Coast.

I was searching for the chili rice recipe used by Shanghai Jimmy in his now closed Dallas restaurants. I am still searching. I did a google and found a thread here about Jimmy. Now I'm hooked on this site, great fun and lots to learn!!!!!!!!!! Thanks roadfooders!

It was the website of the day on yahoo one day. I opened it and was immediately hooked. I had to reinstate my pay-pal account to become an insider by the end of that first week.

I'd read the Roadfood book some years ago and figured that Michael and Jane had gotten into the twenty-first century and put up a website. Turns out I was right.

I actually had the idea of a Roadfood website in 1968,before pc's and of course the internet,so after i invented the internet, you can imagine how robbed i felt when i turned on my computer and there you were!

Either a recipe or restaurant search here as well. It's been so long I can't remember.

There was also a "Steer-Inn" on Rt.22 in N. Plainfield. I stopped for the 19¢ burgers many times in the early 1960's. pb

A coworker showed me a Roadfood book long before the internet. Wow, what a revelation! I have bought and given away several editions since then. One day, after I had discovered this internet thing, I asked myself if they had a site and went looking for it. Happily, I found it and lurked for quite some time before jumping in to give both grief and advice.

Hi, Butch E. Man and welcome... is that bear with you or bare with you? Nevermind.

I may have to get that book !
I remember Steer Inn as beeing there around 1967-68. I grew up in Matawan. Wish I could get in the way-back machine with Mr. Peabody & go get one of those delicious steak subs. I remember them with a killer tomato suace on them...
P.S. Also looking for any info on "Wetson's Hambergers" we used to go to the one in Hazlet on Rt 36 but @ The "Airport Plaza"
Life was soooooo good back then. Must have been my youthful age that helped.
                                    Thanks for the warm welcome

My SO, the computer wizard found it. Passed it on to me. Been hooked ever since. We have made many friends and more out there that we haven't met yet, but they're friends! We have several of the Stern's books.......unfortunately we are in the Arctic and don't get to do much Roadfooding. When down in the lower 48 we do our best!

It was the summer of '03. I was on my way to a BMW Club driving school at Grattan Raceway in Belding Michigan. While passing through Grand Rapids, I found myself behind a car with a personalized plate that read "UNCLE VIC." The driver was tossing perfectly good chili dogs out the window while driving and surfing on his laptop. I grabbed one. It was great! It was my first roadfood experience. Later that day, some guy with Ohio license plates that read "EAT ME MH," made an abrupt left at the end of an off-ramp and destroyed my car. What a memorable day!

Jane amd Micheal came to my restaurant in Huntington Indiana to do a story for Gourmet. Love Me Tenderloin!!! Since that day I don't think there has been a day go by that I don't talk to someone about Roadfood...
