How fast is Waffle House....is it really fast food

Tomorrow, we are taking a stop watch to Waffle House. I want to ascertain that Waffle House belongs under fast food franchises. The last 2 times we were there, it seemed to take at least 10 minutes (not that we complained) for our cooked to order meals to arrive. My eggs were poached perfectly...............the waffles were piping hot.......the cheese on the hashbrowns was melted all the way through. Hey, what in the world is this...............does not seem like fast food to me. Oh yeah.............where is the drive-through window? We could not find one.

I thought we put this issue to bed...or at least already exhausted it.

hmmm, did somebody wake up early, take out their pole, put bait on the hook, and cast the line?

I work in a Waffle House as a server and how fast you get your food depends on the experience level of the cook and the number of people in the store. If the cook is very experienced and there are no orders ahead of you, then you will get your food in 1 to 8 minutes depending on what you ordered. A typical egg breakfast being the fastest and steak dinners well done taking the longest. However if you arrive on a Weekend morning, or just after the bars close you could wait up to 40 minutes before someone takes your order. Waffle House is not set up like the convery belt type cooking a fast food place has, and all food is cooked on a grill just like you would cook it at home.

Waffle House does not imho belong in the FFF forum but the mods here appear to disagree

Anyplace you sit down and order from a waitress is not "fast food" IMHO. When you order from a menu board and it comes in a bag or on a little tray - that's "fast food." Sometimes WH is faster than "fast food" places, but I don't consider WH to be "fast food." Clear as mud, I presume. Now go get some scrambled, and covered, and smothered, etc.

Oneiron: I like the way you think

Waffle house is one of my favorite places. No matter what you order, you get it cooked to order.

Since neither Wafflehouse Rules, BevWilson or The Arby's Guy through in their hat, my vote also goes to TJ Jackson to moderate the fast food forum. In fact, I believe this is the first comment I have entered in the "fast food forum" since it went "underground"

In retrospect, WJ, I hereby nominate YOU to moderate the FF threads. From your expertise, you WILL teach all posters of their silly wanton ways and from there will further enrich their knowledge of places that you patronize; knowing fully well that most of said places are in excess of 600 miles from their location.

I hope that the Sterns, who have in these forums professed their esteem for the hash browns at this eatery, will add a review of Waffle HOuse to this site soon, so that discussion of Waffle House is no longer relegated to this forum

WH has quality condiments on the table NOT in packets. Seen Heinz 57 in a packet lately? The food does not come in a bag on a tray wiped w/ a dirty rag. The food is served on a china plate by a waitress who expects a tip and will refill your coffee cup for said tip.

They cook to order. Crisp or limp hash browns?

It is not fast food, it is good foor rather quickly served. And at a very reasonable price. May take my youngest there tonight since wifie and oldest are at NHS dinner tonight.

I've been eating in Waffle House restaurants since around 1972 and I have to say that I've never had an experience such as you describe. Granted, when there are 75 people waiting for seats on a Saturday morning it can sometimes appear to be less than perfectly clean, but the area where the food is kept and cooked is always in A-Number-1 condition, as are the booths and counters. And, while I've been in several where the service sometimes left something to be desired, I've never seen employees such as you describe. As to the food, well, I can only wonder what might have happened to cause you to consider the food to be anything less that terrific. I'm sorry that you had an unpleasant experience. You really ought to give it another try, because you're missing out on some pretty good food and service.

    Worst thing about WH ?

    They're only in 25 states.

Closest one to me - either Allentown or Clarks Summit PA.
In any case, it's at least a 3 hour ride.

You know, MH, I am thinking that you are the perfect one to write a full review of a Waffle House

If you'll write it and tell me what you ate (keep it simple - and of course crisp plain hash browns, a loaded up hash browns, and a waffle will be a must) I'll go and get digital pics at a local Waffle House and supply them to you for your review submission.

Once it is reviewed, these threads will automatically become eligible to leave the FFF

MH would be the perfect person to review WH, TJ.
Sorry to say that I haven't taken any WH pics

What makes you think that they'll accept the review ?
I sent them three reviews (with pictures) for the same hot dog restaurant in 2004, and it's never made it. Last time I sent it was 9/12/2004. I figured three strikes and you're out.

If the review is not fully complete, it will not be published. You need to be sure it meets all the described guidelines. Since you last attempted to have it listed in 2004, the review procedure has been revised, and you will be notified of any shortcomings in the review, so you'll have a chance to fix them. In the past, they sort of vanished into a black hole of incomplete reviews. I also had a couple go down that dark path to no where! E-mail me if you have any questions. I am always excited to see new places listed and hope you'll try again.

They use a lot of oil when doing eggs and hash browns, I think that's why they're so good. Also, they seem help me out the next day. Oh, don't ever ask for pancakes, don't ask me how I know.

The best reason for not asking for pancakes at a Waffle house is because they don't make pancakes.

I think that Waffle House is certainly a special place in that:

    1. You walk in and at least 3 or 4 employees call out "Good Morning!"

    2. A cheerful server comes to you and politely asks if you are ready to order. If you indicate that you are not, she is fine with that and gives you time to decide.

    3. The food is always cooked to order and nice and hot when served.

    4. Even when the place is crowded, they will "do" poached eggs for you.

    5. If you want to change the way a sandwich is made, they will gladly do it for you.

    6. Happy to give you lots of refills of coffee or sweet tea!
