I can agree with some of that but not all.  Some theories are only better in principal but not practice.  I know that the restaurant industry has changed by leaps and bounds.  I was raised on stainless steel and I  was reamed daily, on a regular basis by many chefs.  Now you simply cant do that.  People will walk out on you.  Goes back to the age old question do you rule with fear or respect?

If you can get one small jem out of an article it is worth the read.
 
As to your point, I think the work force has changed. After all is said and done you can collect unemployment for what 3 years?

Agreed. Employee retention can be a difficult issue to handle, however, setting up a program (like a rewards or work performance program) specifically for employees, can be a motivator. Also, giving a sense of "ownership" to employees can truly make a profound difference. In turn, this will benefit the establishment by retaining the best and making these particular employees as exceptional managers.

Opportunity to learn... advance (by the learning experience) and make excellent $$$.

It's much like purchasing a gift for a child that makes sense to you vs. what they really want or would be excited to have.

You think...wow a bond or shares of stock will teach them about the economy. Then...they will grow up to be an investment banker yada yada.

Or this gift will motivate them to learn about science geography etc.

Those really are your own expectations. The only way to motivate is by example. In business is establishing a business that has a potential for growth financial security cutting any drama off at the pass no taking employees for granted and not being a negative miserable SOB who always waits for the other shoe to drop as far as employees.

It might be a geographical thing but outside of the confines of fast food training tapes that have always been like peppy scripted comedy (I watched every one since the 70s) that tone & 57 steps to whatever would get chuckles around here...for sure.

If you're not making money or your partner or business advisor is losing money for you...there's no list or script of video that's going make everything right. Same for employees...when it comes down to the bottom line.

After over 50 years in business, I've come to the conclusion that you cannot motivate people.
All motivation must come from within - Self Motivation.
As a Manager, all you can do is provide an environment that encourages self motivation.
Generally, I subscribe to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs but not necessarily in the progression he suggests.
Everyone has needs of some kind.
I think self motivation is based on a person's ability to be in an environment that will help them satisfy their needs.
If they see an opportunity to satisfy their needs, odds are they will motivate themselves to work in that direction.
Good Managers are skilled in identifying what a persons needs are, (What Cranks their Tractor) and provides the environment to help that person meet those needs.
To paraphrase Zig Zigler, " If you help others get what they need, you will get everything you need."
