We just returned after spending 5 days in Gatlinburg, Tenn. We go there 4 or more times a year and try to go somewhere new each visit. We always go to the Apple Barn for a fried apple pie! This time we visited Huck Finn's Catfish in Pigeon Forge. It is locally owned and operated and specializes in "All'U'Can Eat Dinners. Catfish and/or chicken is $12.95. The sides are served family style and include baked white beans, coleslaw, hushpuppies, dill pickles & onion slices and a choice of french fries or skin-on mashed taters & gravy. The catfish was good, chicken was average (not southern style-not crisp). The white beans were excellent-this is coming from someone who usually doesn't care for them. They were seasoned well with turkey ham. I would rate it average for the area.
On our way to Helen, Ga. for the Ga. Mountain Fair we stopped in Dillard for lunch at the Dillard House. It is just as good as ever!!
The acorn squash casserole was wonderful!

Thanks for the update on Dillard House. I'm trying to talk the Mayor into joining me there for dinner on Saturday, August 5. Paul, Oneiron, anyone else in the area that evening is welcome to attend.

Poverty, I have been in Georgia hundreds of times but I am not familiar with the location. August 5 sounds doable. I do not have a calendar handy but the assumption is that it is on a Saturday or Sunday.

It could not be all that far from Knoxville and probably in Oneiron's back yard?

I'd love to see you there, along with oneiron,as well as his wife, the Driver. Look at a map of Georgia, Dillard is in the very northeast corner. I'll be staying that night at the Riverfront hotel in Helen, if you want to overnight.

Thanks, looks like a great spot, I think I've decided on a mid October get away and looking forward to spending some time there. How are the country hams there? It appears to be a very reasonable price and thought about ordering one. Chow Jim

Familydok- Thanks for the update on Huck Finn's and especially on Dillards. You have triggered a travel-weekend urge in some of us!!

              Poverty Pete-
Janet and I will be headed down that way for the weekend. We plan to be in Sweetwater TN for the Flea Market Saturday Morning (early).

A stop at BENTON'S HAMS in Madisonville TN is also on the list of places to go. After Fred Sauceman did a write-up of Benton's we visited the place and got a great tour of the Country Ham Creation Process....and want to go back to purchase some more ham and proscuitto(sp?) So a stop in Madisonville is also on the agenda.

Another place we will include is Mayfield's Dairy and Ice Cream Parlor in Athens TN. - That should be self-explanatory !!

We are looking forward to finally getting to eat at Dillards, an event that has been on our list for years.

Just for those who have forgotten about Benton Ham's, I have attached their link or at least Fred Saucemans accessment of them. I am looking forward to the meet in Sweetwater and then on to Dillards if I can get over this period of being dizzy and ill.

The first is a map from Sweetwater to Madisonville

This is Fred Saucemans review of Bentons Hams.
