Hundred dollar bills Sat, 01/22/11 10:06 PM (permalink)
Do you accept hundred dollar bills?  Have you tried spending one?

Having one in Los Angeles is akin to being broke.

I was given a hundred dollar bill last week and I had to make a special trip to a grocery store to break it.  I just didn't break it, I had to (my standards) buy something that I really didn't need at the time.  I realize that I could have gone to a bank, but that would have involved a line.  (gasp)

I see the signs everywhere stating that "we don't take bills over $20".   I always thought American currency was spendable.

I realize that hundreds are counterfeited, but so are twenties, tens and fives.  What makes the hundred so different?

How do you spend yours?

I take them only from my regulars, If it won't wipe me out of change. They will usually ask if I have change.
Won't take them at events when I'm busy. They somehow end up finding a 20 in there pocket or coming back with $$.

Businesses can use counterfeit detector pens and accept all bills if they choose to.  I often have one or two "C" notes in my money clip, but try to use them only at large businesses that I know have lots of cash flowing.  I've had no problem with supermarkets, Wal-Mart, hardware stores, etc. accepting or cashing them.

I collect them until I have at least 150 of them, then we go on vacation, they seem to spend well enough!

Mostly the places that don't take them don't keep that much change on-hand.  Although I usually ask if I can spend one, I plan on not being able to, and always ask to get nothing larger than a $50 if I'm cashing a check.  Even the $50 bill is tough to spend sometimes.

LOL, yeah I take 'em, sometimes 150 at a time. Not often that many, usually less than 100. But sometimes more.

I check every one; I check 50s and 100s. I don't get all that many 20s, and even if I got a fake one, it doesn't hurt like getting a fake 100.

I'm guessing you're either a banker or a really good pimp.

If you can pay for your meal with a $100 bill and get a pittance of change back that has the proprietor still smiling then it ain't roadfood.

Yeah, we take them but they sure don't make us happy. As our trailer is at an airport we get a lot of pilots and a lot of them seem to have only hundreds. Maybe 5 twenties would overtax their planes? But since our morning bank is just $190 an early coffee and egg sandwich ($4.00) is a pain in the ass. Two separate ones are a real mess.

I was at Olive Garden once and I gave our waiter a $100 for my check (which was about $20) and he said that he couldn't break it as he had no change. I was lived. A busy restaurant like Olive Garden couldn't break a $100 bill. I asked to see the manager and then had no problem. I guess the waiter just didn't want to make change.

The only time I ever jumped a turnstile on the New York City subway system was back in the late 1970's (statute of limitations has long since expired), when the policy was that bills over $10 were not accepted, even if the purchase was over $10. All I had was a $20 bill, it was late at night and there were no stores open.

I still remember my Grandfather dying (1961)and as we were going thru the house afterwards Mom and Uncle found
2 $1000 Bills which they showed us kids. Unfortunately they turned them in for regular money. Wish I had one now.
