NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Cafe Au Lait and beignets for everyone: Cafe Du Monde is open for business.
The landmark Cafe Du Monde reopened Wednesday for the first time since it was shuttered at midnight Aug. 27 as the hurricane approached New Orleans.
Cafe Du Monde is not only a favorite attraction for the tourists who flock to New Orleans, but also for the residents who are trickling back to the recovering city.
"It makes a huge statement for the city of New Orleans: We're open for business, come visit us," said Councilwoman Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson, who represents the French Quarter. "The most significant thing about Cafe Du Monde is it is a draw for locals and tourists."

This is indeed good news but I do think Cafe du Monde's beignets are overrated tho the chicory coffee is very good PROVIDED you do not get a large cup which gets you a nasty styrofoam container.
For the best beignets (and their innovation beignet fingers), cruise over to Coffee Call in Baton Rouge. Great place that moved from one end of a shopping center to another when Wal-Mart tore the old one down. They didn't take it lying down. They instead moved the old ice-cream store decor (and seemingly years of grease & powdered sugar) across the way (on College Dr just S of I-10, beyond Wal-Mart) with the help of a jazz funeral band! A hoot and a half.

We are travelling the Alcan with a box of Cafe du Monde's beignet mix! My former boss bought it for me......I warned him........don't wear black or navy blue! We will fix them up properly when we get to California...powdered sugar and all. No chickory for the coffee, boo hoo.
