BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- If a kid'll eat the middle of an Oreo first, does the same go for a Hydrox? A new generation of children are getting a chance to find out.

Kellogg Co. announced Thursday that it has reintroduced the Hydrox brand for a limited time to mark the 100th anniversary of the cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie.

The Battle Creek-based company says Hydrox cookies started returning to store shelves this week.

The treats were introduced in 1908. They were reformulated and rebranded as Droxies in 1999 by Keebler Co., which Kellogg acquired in 2001.

Kellogg says the new Hydrox cookies will contain zero grams of trans fat per serving.

They will be available at a suggested retail price of $3.19 for a 14-ounce package.

Purchased 4 packages of these limited edition cookies today at Shoprite in Englewood NJ. Cost was $2.39. There was also a coupon for free milk(up to $4.00) if you bought 4 packages. These are as good as I remember. When I was growing up we were a Hydrox house not Oreo's. Having a delicious time eating as I type.

Good deal to get the milk with the cookies there! Both go hand in hand real well.

I was just flipping around the channels this evening, and there was a show on the Food Network all about cookies.

It mentioned Hydrox cookies were discontinued in 2003, because they could not keep up with Oreo. Or, something to that effect.

Glad to hear that an item that lasted nearly 95 years, will offer loyal customers who miss Hydrox, a chance to take a walk down memory lane. Sometimes, out of site out of mind.

For those in the NY/NJ area, this is the week to stock up on those Hydrox cookies. Pathmark (maybe their owner A&P, too?) has them for $1.74. ShopRite has them for $1.79.

Picked up a package for $2.50. How can something be sold as 100th anniversary edition if they've only been sold from 1908-2003 and then 2008

Great A&P is offering a special on Sunshine Hydrox cookies for the new sales week starting Labor Day weekend. The 14 oz package is just $1.89.

That got me to thinking. Wow, if Hydrox cookies can make a comeback, how about Jane Parker Cinnamon Donuts?

Any one remember just how good these little sweet donuts were???

I sure wish they make a return appearance to celebrate Great A&P's 150th annniversary celebration next year.

Picked up a package last week, and they're already gone! Great cookie, good chocolate flavor, just the right mix of creme filling, wish they'd stay around permanently, but I guess in this day and age we should be grateful for small favors and enjoy them while we can!

Hydrox were around long before Oreos. Hydrox, like all treats at that time, were designed to appeal to adult’s tastes. That was because only adults had money and made all purchases.

Oreos were copied after Hydrox, but their manufacturer had what was a radical idea at the time to design a product specifically to appeal to children’s tastes. That is why Oreos are softer and sweeter while Hydrox were crisper and less sweet.

These Hydrox taste pretty good, but to me, it seems that they're lacking the complexity of the original. I think that they taste fairly close to Oreo's.

I bought a couple of packs of the "Limited Edition" Hydrox this week. I think they taste pretty good but I don't think they taste the way I remember. I know they took out the trans fat and that will certainly change the texture of the filling but I seem to remember that the filling was thinner and not as soft and creamy. In my opinion and "taste memory" the texture of the filling is closer to an Oreo. has anyone done a side by side comparison to see how different they are?

I used to love Hydrox. After reading this thread, I headed out to the local supermarket here in Bmore (Shoppers Food Warehouse) and they didn't have Hydrox. Do we have a list of stores/states that are currently stocking them?

Kelloggs/Keebler Cookies is behind Hydrox, and their web site has no store locator for this product. However, on page 5 of the online Circular for Safeway in Baltimore, they show as on deal for $2.50 until Sept. 2nd. Also, keep an eye out on SuperFresh, another A&P owned supermarket chain. Not on sale right now, though.

although they had "Newman-O's" (named for Paul Newman, not the evil mailman on "Seinfeld"). [|)]

I refuse to eat a Hydrox - never did, never will.
And I hate Oreos, too.

Had the Hydrox and they're a lot like Oreos. Not much difference.

The best sandwich cookies I've tried are the 365 brand available at Whole Foods. You'll never want an Oreo again.

The local Pick-N-Save has had Hydrox on sale 2-for$4 all month. I ate one bag myself, shared a second with friend, and still have a third sitting on the pantry shelf.
The chocolate flavor was subtler than Oreos, as befits a cookie aimed at an adult palette. The filling was smaller than an Oreo but that did not matter. It tasted better and did not have the disturbing after-feel of Oreo's white stuff.

What a great idea for a company...bring back a discontinued product,fpr a limited time...see if it sells to the nostalia buffs...and if it goes well enough...back in production!!!! Bring back Nabisco Cheese Tidbits...and Bonomo's Turkish Tafee!!!!!

I still haven't found these in any of the stores in the Bmore area. Bummer! If you are in this area, and have found them, please let me know!

Agreed! I just bought the renewed Hydrox cookiesa few weeks back, and I do like them better than Oreo's, too.
And you know what I do to compensate for the smaller Hydrox filling?!?
I often make my own "double stuff Hydrox" by taking off the tops/bottoms of them and combining them together!

Note the retro packaging...I'm not crazy about it; it's very subdued, and did'nt exactly jump out from the supermarket shelf at me. And it was stuck on the 2nd shelf from the bottom; somehow it got lousy product placement (it deserves better!)


I went wild and also bought the Famous Amos cookies, and ironically, they tasted VERY much like the Hydrox!
My hips felt huge for a few days afterwards, though!!


Who else likes dipping some of them in milk, too?!?

Personally never understood the attraction of chalky textured cocoa flavored cookies with shortening-like overly sweet filling. But hey, to each his own. I've heard whispers that some people even like catsup on a hotdog. Gasp!

If I were to eat a Hydrox cookie, and I did say, if. I would eat an Oreo. But, of course, not, just one. I defy anyone to eat just, one.

When I was a kid, my Mom bought Hydrox because my Dad liked them. What I remember was a thinner, crispier cookie than Oreo, and the chocolate was deeper-flavored, sort of like the difference between milk and semisweet chocolate. Also, in the original Hydrox, the icing between the darker chocolate wafers was thinner than Oreo's, not as creamy.

I bought a package of Hydrox at my local ACME supermarket a couple of weeks ago and thought they tasted just like Oreos, so I was disappointed.

Never had a Hydrox-barely ever had a store bought cookie growing up.My Mom was a June Cleaver type.Occasionally we had Oreos-okay for me...

FYI for those in the Northeast- I own a grocery store in VT and our wholesaler (AG New England) just brought Hydrox in stock so look for them to be showing up in independent grocery stores in New England.
(our first case will arrive 10/1) Can't wait to try a sample. (Strictly for quality control purposes only, of course!)

Ellen, thanks for your kind offer. Still haven't seen them in our MD stores. Truthfully, I'd say there is an excellent chance that I'll taste them and be completely underwhelmed. But I do remember liking them better than Oreos way-back-when. I'll have to look for Famous Amos brand as well, since you said they taste the same.

I will send you an address separately...I'd probably have you mail them to the Columbia address, since getting packages here in the city is a pain. I've got to do a little shopping later today, so I'll do one last check, and if they aren't there, I'll take you up on the offer. Thanks again!!

PS Just found out I'll be moving to the Eastern Shore of MD (Easton area) and although it's not my beloved SoJersey shore, I'll once again be near the water...hate moving but looking forward to the change. Will miss Bmore, though!!

My parents always bought Hydrox, NEVER Oreos, for our school lunches. (I didn't like Hydrox, and was envious of my friends who had Oreos, because Oreos were sweeter.)

That said, I'm THRILLED to hear that Hydrox are available again, as I can't wait to surprise my 83 year-old parents (who were sad when they couldn't find them anymore.)
