Hydrox cookies

Now that Hydrox cookies are appearing on store shelves, (Great A&P and its banners are having a special on the 11-13 oz package for $1.89 for the Labor Day weekend), I was wondering if Jane Parker Cinnamon Donuts have a chance of reappearing during Great A&P's 150th anniversary next year? Any one remember these great donut treats?

Our A&P is fairly new. There were other A&P's in the area the preceeded this location, but this location is less than 10 years old. I am friendly with the Bakery Mgr. I will be sure to ask, if they have special, nostalgic promotions planned for the anniversary. I found a recipe for Jane Parker. It is not the cinnamon donut recipe, but I am going to give this one a go. Do you have any memories of Jane Parker Spanish Bars? Jane Parker Spanish Bars Ingredients 4 cups water 2 cups raisins 1 cup shortening 4 cups all purpose flour 2 cups white sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 cup chopped walnuts Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9 x 13 pan Cook raisins and water for 10 minutes over medium heat. Stir in the shortening. Remove from heat and let mixture cool. Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, groundallspice and salt. Add flour mixture to the cooled raisin mixture andblend well. Stir in the beaten eggs. Add the chopped nuts (if desired). Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for35 minutes, OR, until center springs back when lightly touched. When cake is cool, spread your favorite vanilla frosting on top.

I remember those Jane Parker Cinnamon donuts. I don't remember exactly they went off the market, but one by one every supermarket chain in the northeast closed their own bakeries until only Wegman's is left. Most of these bakeries also produced great donuts. They all outsourced. Giant of Landover had a bakery in Silver Spring, MD that turned out great stuff until just a few years ago. I have found that Wegman's Cinnamon donuts satisfies my jones for a good donut. They are not as sweet as some of my old favorite brands, however. I hope A&P brings back some of their famous in-house manufactured food products.

Where, oh where, can we get Hydrox cookies? Many of us loved them better than Oreos--they were moister and denser. When Sunshine Bakery was bought out by Keebler, Hydrox got a new recipe (horrors!), a new name--Droxies (even worse!), and were shortly discontinued. Anyone who can put a handle on this gets a Hydrox halo! BTW: Freeze Oreos--then they taste more like Hydrox.

Bought several packages of the Hydrox when they said that it was for a limited run. Wish I didn't buy any. When they bring back a product they should bring it back as it was, not as some new recipe that doesn't taste anything like the old one.
