I am the only one in my city who thinks Applebee's foods is BLAH

The other night a friend and myself were discussing where to go for dinner. Somehow the lure of the usual haunts was not grabbing me so i suggested Applebee's (HUGE MISTAKE).

We order the ultimate trio which consisted for two tiny riblets (4 inches long, 1 inch across), a half cup portion artichoke dip, corn chips (most were broken), and three tiny wonton tacos for $16.49. Then I had shrimp marinara which was priced $13.50 and this consisted of eight overcooked shrimps, 1 cup of mushy whole wheat penne, and loaded with Ragu tasting tomato sauce and way too much hot pepper. It was warm, not hot. We also got two strawberry daiquris.

Our bill came to 65 dollars for her meal, my meal, two drinks, and the appetizer we shared. If this has been a great meal, then fine, but the food was boring, standard, and flavourless, overpriced and overhyped. Yet, the place is always packed to the brim, noisy, and I still cannot figure it out. I should have gone for some Vietamese cuisine, diner, or fine Italian instead. Better value and food.

I'm guessing that this particular Applebee's is located on Elm Street, because your dinner sounds like a nightmare!

Unfortunately too many folks do this and these chains still flourish.

I had expectations that it should be good if its always packed capacity when i drive by it. Hmm..guess that is not a good indicator of quality, nor value.

Yes..and I think most people like these places because you know what you expect, it's standardised, cheery and happy.

I have to admit the wait staff was friendly. I have been at Red Lobster a couple of times in my life, and I found the service quite friendly.

However, there is a diner with a great breakfast that i go to once in a while, and the waitresses are in their fifties and sixties and a total hoot.  They make chili burger there..oh damn it is good.

The last time I went to an Applebee's I ordered a salad with grilled chicken on it. The chicken was ice cold, and looked like it had grill lines drawn on it by magic marker. I asked them to take it back because the chicken was bad. The waitress brought me another salad with a similar nasty piece of chicken, and I was advised that they come pre-cooked and that's what you get with the salad.  Really disgusting. Never been back.

The only time I was ever in an Applebee's my grandson and I waited forever to be waited on, and then even longer before what we hadn't ordered was served ice cold to us.

The Radisson hotel on the University of Minnesota campus has an Applebee's as its restaurant.
I've had to take job candidates there for breakfast because good places (like Al's Breakfast) are too far away, take too long, or would require meeting the candidate at about 6 a.m.

This Applebee's has an extremely limited breakfast menu.  Although it is edible (barely) and the service is pretty fast, it's certainly not much to write home about.  I usually order bacon and an English muffin, a la carte.

I haven't set foot in it, otherwise.

Applebees tries to incorpoate itself into the fabric of the neighborhoods they reside. They usually do a nice job of hiring hs and college students and treating them well with understanding that school comes first. The restaurant usually sponsers local softball, baseball, etc teams. Those teams usually make Applebees their before or after game hangout. They hang photos and jerseys of the local hs and college sports teams, and often give financial support to athletic, arts, and academic booster organizations as well as paying for ad space in local arts programs and brochures. They do seem to give back to the community.

Applebees has both an early and late happy hour (in states where it's legal) and the Jack Daniel's tastes the same there as anywhere. Their "bar food" like chips and dips and mozzarella sticks are passable and usually 1/2 price during early and late happy hour - making the bar area a good stop.

As a model, I think they do alright. Which is why town leaders like seeing them come to town. They seem to help support the local community in which they reside.

None of this seems to explain why their entrees are so darn underwhelming to disappointing.

Yes....I have rarely experienced that in other places. Even in Red Lobster or I hate to admit, Olive Garden..always perfect temperature.

The only saving grace about these chains is the sweet people who work there..honestly,never had a bad experience, kids are always cheery and friendly.

It seems that overall, the food is blah. Nothing horrible..but the whole prepacked thing is gross. So all they do is heat it up. YEESSHHH.

You must be referring to an Applebee's in a parallel universe.  They sure don't do any of that around here.

Edit: I take it back. They do hang pictures of Ohio State teams.

Applebees here is a teen hang out..or a place for twenty-somethings...or people who like pre- frozen poor quality food. It makes other chains look great by comparison

While maybe a step up from some chains, I can't find anything there that I want to eat, other than the French Onion Soup, which is really no better than anyone else's version.

I have never been a big fan of Applebee's.  Some years ago they seemed to be trying to up their quality a bit, but then they sold out to IHOP and the quality dropped below the basement again.

You might as well just go to McDonald's - it will be cheaper.  The service was good the last (final) time we went there but the food was nothing to write home about.

I've eaten at Applebee's twice. The first time, the chef lost the salt shaker in the food. The second time, at another Applebee's, the knife they gave me was filthy; I mean that you could write your name with your finger on it. When I pointed it out to the manager,  I got a new knife, and no apology. I doubt there will be a third time.

I had not heard of the sale to IHOP - all I know about IHOP today is they are terrible in every respect to what they were way back when - they left Cinci and came back and do not even resemble what they once were.  Horrible pancakes.

On Applebee's website history, IHOP purchased Applebee's in 2007. First I knew of it too, don't like either of them.
