I have this urge to buy Bongo Drums. Why?
Thu, 04/12/07 9:50 PM

All of a sudden I got this urge for bongo drums and ended up on eBay checking them out. $13.99 and I can have them. What's wrong with me? I am not musically inclined in any way and got kicked out of tonette class in the 5th grade because of my rendition of jazz and haven't ever played a musical instrument since.

Matthew McConaughey got arrested in Austin several years ago for playing the bongos, drunk and naked, in his living room. (He had the curtains open so passersby could see his nakedness.) Perhaps he could provide you with some insight...

Often cited as part of the 'Boomers' Attempts to return to "The Good Old Days" buying pieces of our missing childhood years seems to be the way to 'stay young' these days. Look at how anything from the 50's & 60's commands a focus group of followers...be it food, toys, films, music... it doesn't seem to matter what the item. There are those who will take up collecting those items. I recall beating my fingers to black and blue knuckles trying to master the technique for making Beach party Music come alive!! It never worked for me.

A few passing thoughts: Primal scream - primal urge Or you have discovered a jut in your strut, a glide in your stride, a dip in your hip, and you have a whole lot of soul. Buy the drum, find a drum circle to participate in, and enjoy, it is a kick. Peace out

I wouldn't join a drum circle with a $14 bongo. You might think about spending more than that and get something decent. World Market has some nice African conga stlye drums, which are perfect for playing and joining drum circles. Plus, they look nicer and are a better conversation piece than those cheapo bongos. If you don't have a World Market near you, try TJMaxx (but be careful, some of the conga drums there are real bad), or an African art store.

I too have experienced such inclinations. Some acted upon, some not. Those acted upon include purchasing a guitar and later a harmonica and a recorder. The best was when I was working for a mortuary and during a slow period I decided to go buy a putter to knock around a few balls in the "Green Room." I went to the sporting goods store and ended up buying an entire set of golf clubs. It had everything but the putter. One Saturday afternoon I was reading the ads from the Sunday paper which was delivered on Saturday and had a ballgame on the little b/w TV when I looked up and noticed the ballplayers on the TV were smaller than the door knob on my front door. I went out and bought a 19" Sony Trinitron within an hour. I am the classic impulse buyer. Almost all have worked out favorably. I still have the Bose speakers and Pioneer CD changer I bought nearly 20 years ago. I still posess the VCR I bought nearly 30 years ago because I was working OT on Saturday and evening shift on Monday when the '78 NCAA Final Four was here in St. Louis and I missed the whole damn thing. Bottom line, buy'em, beat'em, dig it, daddyo.

I say go for it Davydd, just don't video tape anything....it always ends up on the net!

gatorbreath, I know impulse. I once stopped for an oil change for my Silverado pickup truck after work at the Chevy dealer and two hours and 45 minutes later drove off with a brand new Trailblazer. Scorereader, Hmm, we have a World Market nearby...Conga drums...and next to it is a Dick's Sporting Goods store...I wonder if they have cast iron Dutch ovens... Oh man, these impulse feelings...and happening when I owe taxes and am not getting a return.

If you find yourself wanting to hang out in smoky coffee bars with self professed Communists, wearing goofy berets, shouting bad poetry while banging on the bongos, be afraid, be very afraid.

Have you noticed people are wearing a lot more black these days? I went to a gathering with my wife's volunteer friends at the University of Minnesota Raptor Center a couple of years ago at a house on Lake Minnetonka. The owner had a collection of all kinds of drums and we started beating on them. It turned out to be very therapeutic. I kind of surprised myself and loosened up and relaxed. We will be going again there for a gathering next month. I am wondering if they will pull out the drums again.

Hey mon, good idee!! over the years I have picked up a collection of drums, too, which I play every now and then. My real favorite is a doumbek with a tambourine inside the head! I think it is from Pakistan. I also have a large handdrum from Pakistan with jinglebell like things in the rim. Fun!! There's a cool store here in NYC, Drummers World on W. 46TH St. that sells all sorts of ethnic percussions at good prices. http://www.drummersworld.com/dsp/main.php The doumbek w/jingles is $55 and they ship. I also got a Brazilian tambourine ("pandieros")that has "reverse" jingles; they use it during carneval and it has a neat sound. Also "tambourins" that are played with drumstick. Drumming is (one of) my therapies (if not my neighbors')... And for those bongo fans, long live Maynard G. Krebs!

I went into a World Market today and didn't see any drums or forgot to look about halfway in because I spotted little jars of Marmite on the shelves. So I bought one. Very salty, very yeasty. I can understand how it could be very addictive. The size of the jar and the price could bankrupt me if I got addicted. So I quickly made up a batch of my smoked salmon dip when I got home, another very addictive concoction.

I might be getting him mixed up with a good friend of mine who's wife once walked into the living room in the early morn and caught him practicing his guitar on the floor totally naked, with a almost depleted jug of wine by his side. I get all these naked musicians mixed up...

Head to Vegas and audition for the "Stomp" show...that should cure your percussive urges. I play a conga drum (with mallets) in our Shrine Oriental band. We have 8 other drummers and six musette (a double reed horn) players, as well as 2 cymbal players and several members with no musical aptitude whatsoever - one plays tambourines and 2 march around waving large sabers. We all wear arab outfits, complete with the head scarves, and have a riot in parades - we played in the St. Patrick's Day parade last month, and the summer parade season starts soon. We won best Orienal Band last year at our regional Shriners convention. We especially enjoy playing in the center ring to open up the Shrine circus performances. No bongos, though one guy plays quads. Beer is generally involved in our performances, too.

Why do Shriners drive tiny little motorized cars? Why do they dress as clowns on stilts? I'm guessing because they are a bunch of fun loving civic minded guys trying to support good causes. That and they drink beer. I guess. MikeS.

Why, sure we want to dominate the world, Sizz...just ask Pat Robertson, John Ankerberg, or any conspiracy nut. Didn't you ever see the Simpsons' episode where Homer joins the Stonecutters?
