If it had not been your restaurant, you could have said,"Only to catch the rats"

I really don't get all the places people feel the need to bring their dogs these days. A lady had one in the cart at the grocery store the other day and it yapped at everyone who passed within 10 feet. WTF? (oops, wrong thread) I like dogs, but there are a lot of people I could live without!

Our dogs travel with us, but I would NOT consider bringing them into a restaurant or Food Service area. When we do use a public park or picnic area, we do our best to remain out of the "Mainstream" of people traffic and the dogs are ALWAYS leashed. They ride well, and behave in general, but it would be hard to manage them and enjoy a relaxing meal at the same time. They seem quite content to be with us instead of the Kennel when we travel. Why do we bother to do that, since it does take a lot of travel time to care for them. Our local boarding kennel now charges $20 per day per dog. That has an impact on our travel budget when we do a week or two on the road.

          A little off topic.

I used to train guide dog puppies and would routinely travel with them (generally at about 6mos. on) as they were preparing for their formal matriculation.

Restaurant training was basically the "go under" command that included go under the table, stay under the table, do nothing under the table, ignore dropped food while under the table, etc.

Most people were surprised to see the dog emerge.

Too bad all dogs can't be well behaved and reliable, I think I'd be happy with civilian dogs -- especially in outside dining areas and such.

There are many "guide dog traveling with guy" that can follow this, but that would really be digressing.

          ---------------
That reminds me of the motel I stayed at with the following pet policy:

“I’ve been operating this motel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, linens, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a motel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my motel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here as well.”

That said. Remember, a guide dog is not a pet. Don't put up a sign that says "No pets, except guide dogs" ... it is more appropriate to say "no animals, except those in service to the handicapped" ... and finally, remember all handicaps are not obvious ...

          Sorry for the discourse.

I've got three constantly hungry, curious and mischevious beagles. I don't think I could afford to take them to a restaurant!

Bruce I have a herd of grandkids that fit your description of the Beagles ! Add "Long-eared, wiggley, and constant yapping and rough-housing" and you pretty much have the family image !!

My grandmother never went anywhere without her dog. If Toby wasn't welcome, she'd stay home, thank you. We could go to restaurants without Toby, but there was a preference for outdoor areas where (at one time) dogs were allowed. Might I add that Toby was very well behaved and my grandparents were educated and VERY well respected in the Greenwich, CT scene.

As a side note, when I dedicated my thesis to them, she made me put in an errata sheet that included Toby.

I went to see the allergist yesterday and while waiting I broke out in hives and my eyes started swelling shut. Some fool woman brought her dog to the allergist office! The little ugly thing was in some purse looking thing.

Now, I love animals. I grew up around them, I suffered to be around them. From chickens to llamas.

Personally I think it's rude to bring an animal to a place where you could cause someone to suffer.

I don't care how well behaved they are. My kids are well behaved but I don't take them everywhere.

I don't mind outdoors though. At least I can avoid the non breathing side effect of allergies brought about by dogs when outside.

In NYC and Los Angeles it is a common site for people to bring their dogs to the outdoor cafes while they eat...

Hey, as long as they are leashed up and don't bark, I don't mind...

I don't like when I go over and visit people's houses and they've got dogs that jump all over you and scratch you , and bark like crazy. Finally, if I'm lucky, they put them in another room

Our little companion traveled back and forth across country many times with us. We would never have even considered taking her into restaurants with us. She was well behaved, didn't mind waiting for us until we returned to her and we would never have allowed her to intrude upon anyone else. As Mr. Bowen said, it becomes more and more expensive all the time to kennel pets and although we did it when absolutely necessary, we could never afford it now, but then we don't travel as we once did, and we no longer have our dear Tasha, therefore no problem.

Pets are far more than mere animals.....more like true members of the family, but one doesn't allow family members to be bothersome to others, so pets shouldn't be allowed to be obnoxious either. Just common sense should prevail, as in everything.

                        Donna

Do what I do, Ellen. I put on my no nonsense face and tell the owner of the dog that's jumping on me: "If this animal touches me one more time, I WILL hurt it".

If they don't like it, tough. Learn how to properly raise a dog, or keep it the hell away from guests.

I don't care how much Demi aggravates me, I'm not going to hurt her. McDuff, on the other hand, best watch his P's and Q's.

Funny, McDuff said the very same thing about you !!

I have only "rescue" animals (excepting our chickens, swine and sheep) in our house. My oldest daughter had a party last night w/ about fifty to sixty teenagers in attendance. I took our not well behaved animals to my office which is 300 feet from our house for safety...both human and animal.

I was impressed that we only had one person litter...a Mickie D's meal bag. We also had one baggie w/ a substance that looked like oregano(I know it is not but just trying to be nice) in the bottom tossed into the ditch...who knows?

In Cathedral City, Ca we had a true troop of "deranged" people come into the cafe. The dog was a Yorkie, always dressed in some kind of costume that looked like your grandmother made it from old drapes......and then there were the little hair clips........Oh Mignonne! you look so cute! Mignonne was accompanied by her gay owner, "Wolf" and the nice lady Francoise who has Alzheimer disease and tried TWICE to cash a $1,000,000 check from Ed McMahon. But Mignonne got her own proper lunch on a plate........diced ham, gorgonzola cheese, bread and butter and tomato slices. Mignonne was definately more spoiled than Demi or McDuff!

I know oregano when I see it. Send samples and I can confirm or (most likely) deny said sample has culinary value.
