I just figured out McDonalds appeal!

Terrible burgers, we all know that, however there is an appeal to them, especially the double cheese burger for a buck, I, hem, haw, like them. I figured out why, UMAMI, McDonalds adds it to the meat, no question in my mind, no other possible reason, people keep buying these death burgers, we are all hooked on umami! Any thoughts?

I look at McDonald's burgers the same way I look at that nasty "cheese" sauce that comes with tortilla chips at sporting events...cheap, tasty, HORRIBLE food that I simply must have periodically.

Of course, McDonald's has the added bonus of being open 24/7/365, so no matter what time of what day I happen to be hungry, I can go there, spend a couple of dollars, and get food that will satisfy my hunger without my having to cook. Which is a very valuable trait after a 20-hour workday.

That said, I think it's a combination of the MSG and the grease.

The appeal of McDonald's? Well, this morning the Waffle House, Tee Jay's, Bob Evans, Sunbury Grill and Johnstown Family Restaurant were filled to capacity with waiting lines, so I made a quick trip to the McDonald's Drive-thru and got a sausage McMuffin for a buck and a large coffee for a buck-twenty nine. The McMuffin was filling and not bad, and the coffee as always was tops.

I love a McDonald's burger.  Any of them - Big Mac, McDouble, Royale with Cheese - they all rock.  I wouldn't call any of them a great burger, but sometimes I've got to have one.

Correction: The Mc10:35 is a great burger.

No one here knows how to google?

    Mc10:35 101
    1. Go to McDonald's right when they are transitioning from breakfast to lunch, approximately 10:35.
    2. Order one of the remaining Egg McMuffins from the breakfast menu and also order a McDouble since the lunch menu is now open.
    3. Take the egg and Canadian bacon from the Egg McMuffin and put it on the McDouble. (I ate the muffins and pickles separately)

I tried one for the first time a couple weeks ago.  I hadn't planned on it, but I stopped for gas at 10:30 and McDonald's was right next door.  The Mc10:35 is even better than the sum of the parts.

Thanks. I'm unfamiliar with Pulp Fiction -- other than the cheap, pulp paper magazines that used to exist.

That 10:35 thing wouldn't work around here. Come 10:30 on the dot they switch, and even if they have anything left over they won't let you have it.

Chewy, It looks like Umami Burger will be MeUmami burger next week, along with In N Out Burger and Philippe's................

I envy you, ya got to try the lamb, maybe you can bown a beef at the same sitting, Philippe's is great, maybe a few sandwiches to go for your late night, they will give you a side of gravy, so your sandwich doesn't fall apart, double dip your sandwiches you eat there, as I'm sure you already know. Depending on the In and Out, be prepared for a wait. The one in Palm Desert is minimum 1/2 hr. That Umami burger does look great. Nate'N Als in Beverly Hills, great breakfast, celebrity watching place, Grille on the Alley also in BH, great dinner spot, also celebrity spot.

McDonalds burgers are all about salt.   Ever compare the salt content of a McDonalds burger vs. hamburger (about 10x)?

Had a coupon & tried their 1/3 lb angus burger a few weeks back.  Bad enough the burger was dry and nearly tasteless (except for the salt), but the salt content ate away at my tongue.  If salt is a concern, it's best to stay with just the fries - they have a fraction of the salt vs. their burgers.  I'm guessing their burgers are loaded with a beef-broth concoction.

IMHO, I think it's just the warm, soft & chewy texture coupled with the slight tang of the ketchup & pickle. You really don't taste much of the burger itself.

Last time I ate at a McDonalds was probally '81. Now I get their Coffee a couple times a week. Appeal for there food is fast and cheap.
But to call their burgers as CTF says death burgers, I don't know. There is worst food out there than Mc D's.  And people flock to them.

OMG on Valetine's Day lines around the McD's here go around the building at least twice. LOL

Michael Douglas is an unemployed defense contracter who wants breakfast at 'Whammy Burger'.  They tell him they stop serving breakfast at 10:30 and he looks at his watch and it's 10:33 or so. He was already having a bad day.  Pretty good movie.

I eat a Big Mac once in a great while, because they are the closest thing to a 'big boy' sandwich at the long ago sadly closed Big Boy restaurants in my area.I like some of their breakfast items-sausage mcmuffin, egg mcmuffin.Much better than most fast food joints.

Ann - They still have Big Boy restaurants in Michigan.  I had to stop and have a Big Boy sandwich when I saw one.  I really enjoyed the experience.
Off topic - Would McDonald's be sued for their obvious rip-off of the Big Boy sandwich if they tried it today?

No. food doesn't get intellectual property protection.  Starbuck's can roll out a new frappucino flavor. That can't stop Dunkin Donuts from making a similar flavored coffee ice cream drink to compete.

I don't think they could market it under the same name though due to trademark restrictions.  Is that right?  It seems like it's more a matter of who gets it out there first to the paying public.
