Welcome back, i95, we've missed you. Go tell me what you've been listening to lately in that thread. I need to go on a music-buying frenzy.

quote:Originally posted by improviser Welcome back, i95, we've missed you. Go tell me what you've been listening to lately in that thread. I need to go on a music-buying frenzy. OK. Nearly a month-and-a-half delay in responding (sorry, improviser ) -- and while the CD, itself came out last year (and that I've touted it elsewhere) -- and in addition to new works by the Shins, Fountains of Wayne, Holmes Brothers, Regina Spektor, Sarah Borges and Big Sandy ("Turntable Matinee" is the latter's best work to-date), amongst others, my still favorite new(er) CD is by: James Hunter The CD is: "People Gonna Talk" (Rounder Records) Hailed by Van Morrison, no less, as "one of the best voices, and best kept secrets, in British R’n’B and Soul," this particular disk is perenially in my CD player since I first purchased it last year (and after hearing it first on Towson State University's [Maryland] great WTMD-FM). The New York Times called Hunter's "slithery soul groove" a re-creation of the "delicate and comforting soul sound of (Sam) Cooke, Jackie Wilson and lesser-known figures like Roy Hamilton and Little Willie John" (March 4, 2006) and that is spot-on as Hunter's voice so eerily recalls the great Sam Cooke however this CD puts those vocals in front of a mixed backbeat of ska, R&B, soul and American roots music. For further proof, go here, turn your speakers up and listen to clips of each of the 14 songs from "People Gonna Talk" and see whether you're not at your local record store buying this CD today. FYI.
