I-10 Lonely Highway? Sat, 02/5/05 6:11 PM (permalink)
I will be traveling I-10 this weekend from Florida to California, are there any suggestions for places not too far off the highway? Preferrably hot dog places, and breakfast too.

I hear I-10 is a pretty desolate stretch of road (ugh). so, any suggestions would be great!!!!

Hi Celery Salt.....we did that trip back in 1980 and enjoyed every single mile of it. Had I known that someday I would want to write about the places, I would have made an effort to jot down names, etc., but I didn't. The only thing I can tell you is we had Michael and Jane Stern's book with us and tried to find as many places as we could that they had reviewed. We had some really good meals, and when we couldn't find one of their suggested places, we tried to find our own version of a roadfood place. We truly did luck out a lot of times. YOu can never go wrong following along with Michael and Jane.

Of course, San Antonio is most interesting and we enjoyed a delicious lunch in a little Hungarian place on the Riverwalk.

The Tigua Indian Reservation in El Paso is interesting and we had a good lunch there, of chili and flautas. There was a great BBQ place east and north of El Paso, I think above a town named Horizon (if I recall correctly) that was like a dude ranch and we had a fine meal of BBQ there. Of course, all this was back 25 years ago and even if I remembered names of places, maybe they don't exist today. But I think you may find that I-10 is a bit more interesting than you expect.

At any rate, have a wonderful time, stay safe and we'll look forward to hearing about your trip and what you find in the way of roadfood when you find time.

    Donna

There is a great seafood place on I-10 where it crosses Mobile Bay. I believe the name is The Captain’s Table, or something similar. It is right next to The Battleship Alabama park.

If you are in Houston around lunch or dinner, I would suggest Pappasito’s Mexican on I-10 on the west side of town between Sam Houston Tollway and Gessner. Pappasito’s has the best fajitas around.

On your way into El Paso near Lee Trevino is a very good German restaurant called "Edelweiss". Great portions, and the weinerschnitzel is great.
In Las Cruces, New Mexico, in the little town of Mesilla, which is on the south side of I-10, is La Posta. Excellent Mexican food (New Mexico style).
From Las Cruces to Tucson, not much in the way of eats except fast food; interesting desert country with lots of jagged mountains all along the way. Don't know much about eats in Tucson, been several years since I've eaten there, except chains. From Tucson, don't go into Phoenix unless you need to. Take I-8 west to Gila Bend, then north on state route 85 to I-10. Saves miles and the terrible traffic in Phoenix.

A short time ago, we had lunch at Felix's Fish Camp in Mobile Bay off I10, the food was great and so was the service.

Stop at Chope's in New Mexico (between El Paso and Las Cruces) for the world's best Chile Rellenos. I've been dreaming about them now for the past 13 years since I moved out of Las Cruces...

I disagree about avoiding Phoenix. Tempe/East valley is bursting with food, Ted's Hot Dogs, Restaurant Mexico, to name 2 joints right off the bat. There must be 1000 mexican places in The Valley of the Sun, but Los Dos Molinos is a signature place+
