I-65 between Montgomery and Mobile Mon, 02/14/11 1:30 AM (permalink)
Boy, here's a long shot.  The southernmost end of I-65 is certainly among the most desolate this side of the Mississippi, but next month I'll be riding with a friend down to Mobile and back.  We've got great destinations both down on the gulf and once we get back to his place in Columbus, but is there anything at all of note a hop, skip and jump from the interstate for a snack on the way once we leave Montgomery?  As far as I can determine, there's nothing for 140 miles but beat-up BP stations.  There's gotta be a best-kept secret in southern Alabama that somebody wants to share.

I have stopped at Bates House of Turkey in Greenville, AL.  It is near the south end of Alabama and sits right beside of interstate.  You will see signs advertising it before you get there.  I stopped there several years ago and it was very good at that time.  I believe it is at mile marker 130.  If you stop there please advise how it is at this time.

You are correct in that part of Alabama is food desolate.

I posted your question on a mailing list that consists of Auburn fans and graduates. Here's what I have so far. Please keep in mind I have not personally been to these places.
A place called "Real Pit" in Greenville. He's pretty sure of the name but not 100%.
He said is was attached to a gas station and not much to look at but he enjoyed the food.
Another person mentioned Bates house of turkey and said it was unique and "pretty good"
Kendall's BBQ @ exit 114 Georgiana. He had heard the BBQ was good but said they had one of the best cheeseburgers. He described the CB as "the best a man could ask for"
That's all I have for now, if anymore are mentioned I'll post them here.

Hmmm.  Both Bates and Kendall's sound like really good notions.  I hope my friend, who's driving, will indulge me for a stop at one!

"Real Pit" is the next exit down from the Bates House of Turkey, headed south.  It's part Shell station, country store/meat market and BBQ joint.  The ribs there are OUTSTANDING.  I drive this 2x a year and it's a must stop place to eat.  If you use a GPS, be careful because it will take you past it by a few miles.  It's right off of the highway.

I also recommend "Real Pit". We used to go between Pensacola & Nashville at least 3-4 times a year and always stopped there. Would buy stuff from the meat counter to take to my daughter in Nashville as well as eat there.
Bates on the other hand was just So-So. Not bad but nothing memorable about it. Just an ordinary turkey dinner.
If you're in the Witness Protection Program, that stretch between Montgomery & Mobile would be a good place to live. No one would ever find you!!!

The Barn in Goshen which is EAST of I-65, 35 miles, 2146 County Road 2243,(could also be Conecuh stree) 334-484-3200. Maybe a little hard to find but if you have a GPS, it's worth the stop.
Stagecoach Cafe, Stockton, 52860 Alabama 59, 251-580-0608. It has a buffet and next to I-65.
Mobile has a lot of good places. If you want some places to have lunch around Mobile let me know. It'best to call them first to see what days they are open and how long theree hours are.

The Beacon in Evergreem is worth a stop.  I second Bates. Hooks and Smokehouse have good BBQ.

For good road food in Mobile here's a couple of good ones. For fine po boy's and fresh seafood get off I 10 at Exit 15A and go N on Government Boulevard to Hall's Mill Road just past the shopping center on the right. Take a right and go to the Boiling Point. The best BBQ in the area is at Brick Pit. Get off I 10 at Exit 15B and go N on Highway 90 for 3 miles to Demetropolis Road. Take a left and continue on Demetropolis Road which becomes S University Boulevard. Go about 5 miles from the left you took on Demetropolis to Old Shell Road. Take a right and go to Brick Pit for outstanding BBQ. The best seafood in Mobile, AL is at Wintzell's Oyster House. Get off I 10 at Exit 26 A and go W on Canal Steet. Go .4 mile and turn right on S Washington Avenue. Turn right and go .3 mile to Dauphine Street. Take a right and Wintzell's will be on your right.

At Exit 57 (Atmore) try The Creek Family Restaurant. I've only eaten lunch there but it is always very good. Good country style cooking and the desserts are wonderful. The restaurant is attached to a motel.  Also the Windcreek Casino is at this exit.

Just to close this one out, we did indeed stop by Kendall's for a sandwich, and it was very, very good, although I unfortunately forgot to ask for my sandwich dry (for the billionth time) and sauce on the side.  It's a little walk-up window with patio seating, and they really drown their pork in gooey, sweet, tomato-based sauce.  It's very good sauce, but there was just too darn much of it, overpowering the really tender chopped pork.  Like several Bama que joints I have noticed, they don't do stew.

Our meals in Mobile and Columbus were already planned.  We have stopped at Wintzell's twice before, but our usual stop down there is the great Original Oyster House.  And in Columbus, we enjoyed bulgogi at a Korean place called Ok Sun, which has one of the few fountains with RC Cola on draft in the area.  Thanks for the suggestions; I've been hoping to get to Brick Pit since I rode past it while record shopping, years back.  Maybe one day.
