Ice Cream made by Universities

When I am out traveling, I love visiting college campuses. And I didn't realize until recently just how many make and sell their own ice cream. From the few I have sampled so far, the quality is quite good. Growing up in Pennsylvania, we've always known how good the Penn State Creamery is. The Cornell Dairy Bar in Ithaca has a great reputation and is reviewed on this site. Maybe the best ice cream I have ever had is on the Clemson campus in South Carolina. In the Fall, I especially love the peach which comes with big chunks of peaches in it. They have a small store in the Hendrix Student Center. http://www.clemson.edu/foodscience/icecream.htm Washington State University in Pullman also has a great little ice cream shop called Ferdinand's right on campus. Everything I have had their was delicious and very fresh. They are also famous for their cheese, with Cougar Gold being the most famous. http://www.wsu.edu/creamery/ferdinands/ferdfront.htm College football season is coming and I am hoping to go to as many games as I can. Any other schools make their own?

UCONN in Storrs CT makes their own and has a dairy bar on campus. Some of the flavors are packaged and sold in the larger supermarkets as well.

efuery- Thanks for the reply! I've been to the UConn campus at least twice before and didn't know about the Dairy Bar. This gives a great reason to go back. Isn't their football stadium in Hartford, instead of Storrs?

Mississippi State University makes and sells ice cream, although they are most well known for their Edam cheese. http://msucheese.com/index.cfm See FAQ page for ice cream info.

Extreme Glow- I wish I had known this before. On my last visit to Starkville, all I bought was a t-shirt and a cowbell! Thanks for the tip!

California State University Fresno makes great ice creams! Flavors include root beer float, cake batter, toasted almond, and lemon, among others... they also make award winning wines as well as dairy products (great cheeses), meats and meat products, produce, nuts, and an awesome teriyaki stick meat snack!

I was in Ithaca over the weekend and tried the ice cream at The Cornell Dairy Bar. I got one scoop of the Bavarian Raspberry Fudge and one of the Kahlua Fudge and both were outstanding! I was pleasantly surprised they were open, since their website says they are closed on Saturday.

Don't bother looking for it at UF. You can get smoothies all over campus as well as iced coffees, lattes, all kinds of chain food(a frosty from Wendy's) hear Moe's will be on campus next. No ice cream, closest is a chain across the street that we all know as "Ben and Jerrys".

We were at Michigan State over the weekend and visited the Dairy Bar, one in the Union, one in Anthony Hall. They have cheese..excellent sharp cheddar, but the ice cream is beyond compare. Cream is the first ingredient. We had Sesquecentennial Swirl, made in honor of MSU's 150th birthday. It was birthday cake with green frosting swirled into vanilla ice cream. Wish there had been a way to take some home!

Unfortunately not yet, buffetbuster. Something came up at work and I'm not going to be able to leave as early as I'd thought. I'll post here when I do get some. Clemson is home to my absolute favorite bar in the world...Nick's. Have you ever been there?

The University of Vermont used to have an awesome dairy bar. I had an interview in Burlington, and the interviewer took me to the campus for an ice cream. The home made blueberry ice cream could have been the deciding factor for me moving here from Albany, NY !

improviser- Sorry, I'm not familiar with Nick's. My usual gameday routines include The Esso Club and/or Tiger Town Tavern. What makes Nick's your favorite? Mark in VT- Ice cream being used as a recruiting tool....what an excellent idea! I know it sure would work with me!

Nick's is strictly a beer bar. They're too close to a church to be allowed to serve liquor. I don't mind though. It's almost a pub in atmosphere. Even when Nick's is crowded, you can still hear yourself talk or think, which is never the case in Tiger Town Tavern. TTT is always way too crowded for me. Nick's has a great selection of beer and usually the bartenders have great taste in music. I love to chill out there.

improviser- Thanks for telling me about Nick's. Next time I am Clemson, I will stop in for sure. And you are 100% right about Tiger Town Tavern....it can get insanely crowded at times. Let me know when you go to the Hendrix Student Center for ice cream. I am very interested to know if it is still as good as I remember.

University of Md in College Park has an excellent dairy bar, although it has been a while since I've had any of their ice cream. It's on Route 1, right across from "Fraternity Row." Sorry I don't have a link, but I'll check it out and come back and edit if I can find one for the Dairy.

Add the University of Nebraska to your list. They have a dairy store on the East Campus.

tarragon & PC- Thanks for the new tips about Maryland and Nebraska. Apparently, this is much more common than I first thought. I really didn't expect there to be this many. Since the University of Maryland is in such an urban area, I never would have suspected they had an ice cream store, too. Unfortunately, I was in College Park last fall for a football game (I saw them beat Florida State), but didn't stop since I didn't know about the store. I will next time for sure.

They were quite a good account for the late, lamented Blind Man Ales of Athens, Georgia. (As was The Euclid Avenue Yacht Club in Atlanta.) That says something about the clientele they attract. Now that new beers are coming into South Carolina, I can't help but wonder what all they have on tap at the moment. Thomas Creek is making some mighty nice seasonals, too. Now if Pop The Cap can just repeal the 7%-by-weight law in S. C., more goodies will be sold there! In the interim, come to visit us here in Athens, Georgia... home of my favorite brewpub, Copper Creek Brewing Co. downtown. Now back to the initial question at hand... universities that produce ice cream! Sidetracked By Everyone But CSX, Ort. Carlton in Athens, Georgia, which is on CSX's Abbeville Leg.

Dearfolk, The University Of Georgia here in Athens has a Dairy Science Department. I am almost 100% sure that they continue to make ice cream; they did in years past, when my father was alive and would visit the salesroom once a week and bring some home. I'll ask a friend of mine who is in University Food Service and get back to y'all on this one. Unscoopingly, Ort. Carlton in Tolerant-Of-Me Athens, Georgia.

WVU always had excellent ice cream, very reminiscent of homemade, but I've heard rumours that they have stopped it's production, which if true is a dang shame. I agree with Cajun King and buffetbuster, in that Penn State had some really scrumptious ice cream , also.
