Oh Lee, and offer that Cinci chili w/ or w/o beans. That would go over BIG in Texas! Porker, just what are you trying to say? Looks like the cat had your tounge! [|)] Joe

I love roadfood, but I don't think I would want to own a restaurant under any circumstances. The pressure. The competition. The profit margin. I just wouldn't want to deal with it all.

But I AM grateful for those Roadfood loving folks that HAVE made the plunge, and try to support those mom and pop joints as much as possible.

I'll take the A&W Drive In from Red Bluff, CA, back in 1959, or the Lum's from Vero Beach, FL, in the early 70's. Lee, good post in the Fast Food Franchises & Non-Roadfood Chains thread.

Lee, good post in the Fast Food Franchises & Non-Roadfood Chains thread. Hey John, Did you ever get a chance to check out the Wayside Inn that operated out of the old Lum's site in the 80's and 90's? Last time I was in Vero, it was an empty lot, but when it was open they had some of the best pot pies I ever had, plus a lot of other good stuff. pb

I'd open a Chipotle right near a college campus. Of course, Chipotle doesn't franchise, so there goes that idea.

quote:Originally posted by PapaJoe8 Score, could Chipotle be a "roadfood chain"? Joe apparently some people don't think any chain is a roadfood chain. Plus, some people seem to have a problem with Chipotle simply because McDonalds invested in the company - even though McDonalds sole interest in the place seems to have been to help make the chain grow in order to make money from its investment. McDonalds sold their stock and made a mint from their original investment, and they kept out of how the restaurant ran. Corporations invest in other coporations all the time. I don't see why Chipotle should get such a bad name simply because McDonalds made a sound capital investment and got a good return. In DC we have Baja Fresh and other FF mexican places, IMO, Chipotle is the best. And if they franchised (which I doubt they will, since they haven't done it by now, even when McDonalds was the major investor) I'd open one near a college campus. You'd make a mint.

I have only been on this board for a short time and have read enough flaming to have a barbecue. Leethebard, good post. I was really interested in hearing different opinions. It is post of many different topics, that make this forum interesting. Although, I don't care for the product, I believe a Starbucks may be worth owning. Strictly fantasizing of course.

The "Socratic Method" should stay in law school, where I dealt with it for three long years. Regarding the original question, I live in a small town and we already have a McDonalds, a Subway, a Pizza Hut, a Papa Johns, and a plethora of mom and pop Mexican restaurants and a Waffle House. It's not really a good location for a Cracker Barrel --- an Ollie's Trolley would be nice, but I don't know how profitable that would be. Andrea

Andrea, I had to deal with it back when I was a Philosophy nut. It does come in handy sometimes at the poker table. Has anyone said Puka Dog? I think, that done right, they will go over big on the mainland! Joe

If I were to open a chain, I'd like to open one that would be a bit upscale that would offer fresh, quality seafood with a menu of regional specialities vis a vis True Maryland Lump Crab cakes, Gulf Shrimp, Crawfish boils,(newspapers, corn on the cob et al) instead of the limp, over fried and over-salted that RL and such offer.

Michael could have mentioned it about 900 posts ago.
