I would have to vote for NO. Best selection, best prices, and delicious food.

Memphis is great, but its main gig is BBQ.

I live in Knoxville and they ain't much here except Walmart and Krispy Kreme

What would the agendae be at the convention? Maybe would elect the Mayor as the president. After all, he is a pretty good politician and he can write pretty well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Paul...but this circus needs a Navigator and Wagon Master like Ward Bond, not a Mayor!!
Since the theme of the whole project is ROAD FOOD, I suggest a Road Trip, rather than a convention in one location. Pick a starting and ending point and a series of stops within reasonable driving distance, taking Roadfood Pot luck at the stops in-between. The usual convention is a 3 or 4 day gathering of whomever is involved, so make it a 4 day Road Excursion.
With those parameter's The possibilities have real potential... My first suggestion would be a St. Louis to New Orleans Trip, following the "Blues Highway" U S 61. with one stop being Memphis for sure. Others could be Chicago-Omaha, Memphis-Houston,Portland OR to LA, and of course Portland ME-Philadelphia.
Shorter distances are also a possibility Like St Louis-Kansas City or the Gulf Shore of LA-MS-AL-FL.
To me, for roadfood to achieve it's level of importance in the total daily schedule, travel must be involved !! I really enjoy the discussions about places with potential for dinner etc that my wife and I share while on the road....and the discussions become MORE important as the mileage increases and the hunger level grows !

This is something we have talked about before among the Roadfood.com team. It is something we are very interested in, but it also presents a huge coordination/planning challenge. Any suggestions on how to overcome that?

    Stephen,

There are RV caravans. The Good Sam Club holds them at least once annually from what I've seen in the magazines. Someone there might be able to give some pointers on the logistics of arranging something like this.

Personally, I think the way to go would be a combination of buses and private vehicles. That way (for those who are ready, willing and able) those who want to deviate from the group plan or who want to do something extra will be able to do so.

I think a compromise in the 'togetherness' area is needed. I get grumpy as hell when I have to hang around with my family for several days...I can't imagine allowing everyone in the convention group to live after 72 hours of discussion on the flavor of mustard to put on items that I wouldn't eat under any circumstances!!
Let's look at a looser agenda, that allows for individual tastes and interests. Example-- St Louis for Dinner on Day-1, then Paducah KY for an early Lunch and make ur own way to Memphis for dinner at an agreed upon time and location. The Second Night in Memphis and breakfast on Day-3 there, I would love to do Doe's Eat Place in Mississippi that evening, Then on Day-4 make our way to N.O. for a wrap-up dinner and overnight before heading home. This is just an 'off-the-top-of-my-head type of agenda...but I think you get my point.
I don't think a charter service is ready for us, nor us ready for us either. I vote for private vehicle travel. That way we can find flea markets to browse and load up with junk we don't need ! OR possibly chase a train to get photo's to bore you all with over dinner !!!

At first blush, I liked the tour thing, but the Mayor has a point. Perhaps if there were enough interested, we could do the bus and private vehicle thing. That way people like myself who had their daily route could continue. The St. Louis, Memphis and NO would be wonderful for the Sundancer.

We could also invite someone from PBS to document the journey. It could even be a reality TV thing. A bunch of Americans from all walks of life, united in their search for regional cuisine.

I'm with the mayor on this. I don't want to be in a confined space with everyone after we have a slinger or wilbur in St. Louis! It seems like a perfect place to start, the middle of middle America. We should look for food-related place to visit. The city museum in St. Louis has some type of corndog display. We could have optional events between meals so some could relax and digest, some could do their own thing (the Elvis is Alive museum is really close to St. Louis) and some could clog our arteries more! This is definitely something that would have to happen in the summer!

I like The Mayor's idea of a 4 day roadtrip. Let's have some of the forum users be the hosts in their areas. I also like the idea of a "Roadfoodumentary"-a documentary of the convention/roadtrip. Let's ask Brian Butko. He's the guy who does all those great shows for PBS such as "The Ice Cream Show", "The Sandwich Show", "PA Diners"...count me in for the convention!

    Yummie-
While I enjoy some of the casual travel shows that PBS does, I don't think I can stand the heat I will take when my Mom (91 yrs old and an avid PBSer) sees me eat my way down 'Old Man River' !!!hehehe
The week after Memorial Day we are going to do Rt 61 UP from St Louis to one of my kids place in Wisconsin then a quckly run down I-39/74/65 home..4 days up 1 day back.
I figure this group could look for an early Fall trip down U S 61 if we put our mind to it and started planning now. Mid-Sept. to Mid- October would be my vote for the timing of the excursion. Kind of reminds me of "BLUES BROTHER'S 2000" (I will do the John Goodman role !)

On the other hand ... you all must realize that if we meet each other in person we will be shattering our mental images of what our fellow roadfooders look like. I may be in for a shock, kinda like the first time I saw a photo of NPR's Cokie Roberts.

    Yummie, et al-
I will squirt a shot of cheese-whizzer on the burger to annoint you with the crown you deserve..
I will make no false statements about appearances...There is no way my 6'1" 390 lb body would be able to cope with any form of Charter Bus seat for more than 5 minutes. I chuckled at Jen's comments about internet meeting--- since my meeting with my wife was the result of her placing a personal ad in the local throw-away grocery ad newspaper. (second marriage for both of us going on 10 years now.)
I do believe the stage is set...

Yumbo, I have no idea what the rest of the Roadfood.com group appears like, but I still recall my highschool reunion. I graduated in 1960 and when I attended the last reunion, nobody appeared as they did. Neither did I. When I graduated from Highschool, I weighted 120 and now I am 180. I really does not matter because Roadfood is about roadfood, where you have been, what you have experienced and what you have tasted. I look forward to the people I have communicated with and their points of view.

I think a caravan is best, imagine sharing a bus toilet with 30 people on a diet of chili and Bratwurst! Plus, some people who live in those cities could make it for one meal, people could join and leave as they saw fit. However you get there, I think NO is Nirvana.
