If you weren't here....

reading about food, where would you be?

I would go to the Museum of Science and Industry. Or if the weather improved I'd go to the beach. A trip to The Berghoff sounds good.

Ha....it's been raining for 3 days, dream on about that beach! Museum of S & I sounds great, haven't been in years, but a nice simple meal in front of a fireplace sounds pretty good. Do we have that anywhere in Chicagoland?

At the beach.. It has been very very nice.. In fact, I may just do that tomorrow, as the wind will die down some.

We are getting our "Stuff" organized for the roadtrip that starts this coming weekend. It isn't easy to pack for 4 weeks on the road...especially for an old fart with a bunch of medication to organize, refill, and put in the correct sequence.

At the same time that I am 'Moderating" this site, I am watching the preparation for the "Great Bed Races" on the local NBC station. The bed races are part of the pre-Derby activities here in Louisville. What started out to be a bunch of crazies pushing beds on casters around the track has evolved into a complex night of races. The crazies with the simple beds on wheels are still there...but so are the major companies that have large operations in Louisville. UPS, Ford (2 plants) Humana Healthcare, Yum, and several others are into these races bigtime. The Ford teams have custom designed beds with special frames and wheels. They even designed a lightweight steering arrangement. The driver must be ON the bed and a maximum of four people pushing the device around the track. There are 50 or more entries in the various heats leading to the finals.

The whole evening is covered by the NBC station here and is a lot of fun to watch. Winner gets major bragging rights for a year. That is a BIG deal here.

To give you an idea of how the PreDerby activities draw people in for the fun, On Saturday a week ago the kickoff for the two weeks of Derby festival was an airshow and fireworks on the Ohio River. TheBlue Angels were part of the show. Over 800,000 folks enjoyed the show along the banks of the river. Last Friday nite they had a Balloon Glow (the evening before the scheduled hot air balloon race). 60 balloons lit-up the sky,at the Fairgrounds. 90,000 people came to see the balloons in the nite sky. This area really gets into the Derby !

So we have alternatives to typing reviews of BBQ places and flaming each other !
But a little bit of everything makes for a fun night.

Out here we have the Kinetics Race (at the Boulder reservoir) every May.

You build a contraption to race on road and on water (although more seem to disintegrate in water).

It's an event that seems to have outgrown itself though, I'm afraid it's not what it used to be. Still, the idea remains a classic. How can you not like an event where you are encouraged to creatively bribe the judges, wear goofy costumes, and build rattletraps designed to enrage, encourage, entertain and enchant?
