I watched the girl wash the potatoes and use the peeler, then use the french fry maker right in front of me at the in-N-out in Redding. how are you "sure" the fries are frozen?

I'm in Gainesville, FL. And, I'm afraid, considering where our only In-N-Out is located if I asked for "animal style" I might get it, legs and all. My husbands produce company delivers to them and he says it's not near as bad as I make it out to be. I know it won't be(food wise)the way it used to be so I don't even venture in that direction. However, we do have one excellent burger place called "Mac's", Gainesville owned, Gainesville, operated. Drive through on each side, where you can actually speak at a normal tone. The lady that takes the orders(by hand)sits inside the little burger building looking out through the glass as each person orders, back and forth, back and forth. It doesn't matter how you want your burger she doesn't miss a thing. I've never had an order screwed up. They even buy their burger at Publix Grocery, fresh, right across the street. That's where I get my double cheeseburger, plus pickles, fries(one size), and jumbo sweet tea!

Hello Bill:

I watched them dump em' from a brown paper bag. Surely we do not have the same In-N-Out. I just saw the picture of those burgers and fries, wow! Even the packaging is different.

Rusty,
It sounds like a 'wanna Be' stand. One thing in that article that I can attest to... I taught a lot of H S Seniors and Junior College kids in the High Desert. If the In n Out was hiring word got out quickly and the jobs never got posted at school.. "Friends take care of friends" was the watchword between the kids who worked there and the new hirers. The workers also receive a production bonus ( simple form of profit sharing) that can be as high as a buck an hour if times are good. This incentive really helps the crews get rid of "slackers" or "wasters" their terms for kids who don't work or who try to give away free food to their friends etc. My students would tell me that a 'slacker' is taking money out of their pockets and they didn't like that at all. A good lesson for an 18 yr old to learn....says his Economics teacher!

I think we must have a case, (cases), of like-named eateries, cuz there sure aren't no in-N-out's in Fla. and rusty, I don't know where you are either, but it sounds like the REAL in-N-out needs some legal help here

Well get this, I was just discussing this little bit of info with my supervisor, who, is older than myself. She said In-N-Outs in our area combined, would equal about 40 years! By the way, Bill, yu know where the University of Florida is??? That's where I am. Gainesville. And in advance, I wasn't trying to make you seem like you're geographically ignorant. You may have already my previous post that stated where I am. OHHHHHHHHHH, sorry if this is coming out all wrong!

No problem, rusty. I was already merrily typing along, but I stopped to watch 1975 on "I love the '70s". I just figured from your previous post you were somewhere in soCal. we drive 140 miles down to redding, ca from oregon to get our fix. The attached website shows the locations

Redding's also the northernmost DelTaco outpost, but that's another whole thread

Just got back from San Francisco. On the way to the airport (north on US 101) I looked for an In N Out for my last meal before flying (take out to the airport). Well I passed by a shopping center with a big In N Out on the right, but there was no exit to get there (north of San Jose). I did not find any others, so I will have to wait until next time out west.

Checked the website for locations. I fear I'll never have "the real thing". I may have to go against my better instincts and give our "clone" another try..

One on the constant criticisms of In N Out is the frys. I think they have made a change to them in the last month. They are now often crisper than before. Has anyone else noticed this?

You can order them double-cooked which makes them extra crispy. Seems the regular ones were the same at least at my local In-n-Out when I ate there last week.

The website that hosted the pics of this thing plus the additional photos of the kid who actually
ate it has been swamped (over 50 gigs of traffic) and in fact is currently down.

I'll bet that someone else will mirror the site soon, but be careful in giving out
THIS url to people, since internet traffic *does* cost money!

I'd think that In 'n Out corporate will have some pics of this on their site soon...
hmm, maybe not? :)

The thing that struck me, as I chuckled looking at the picture, is that the kid *might* *just maybe* need more than a small coke to wash that sucker down.

Hell, if I ever have the guts to order a monstrosity like that, I'll be sure (with a carefully coached straight face) to order a *diet* coke. Got to watch the waistline, eh?

RE: In and Out Burger 2003/09/10 16:24:36 (permalink)
Can you imagine the kids in the kitchen when that tag came through?!!

I remember working at the pizza parlor on the SJSU campus towards the end of the semester, when kids would have extra money on their meal cards. This often led to oddball ordering and creative pizza-crafting. I once created a sort of "stuffed" pizza by cooking two pies and then slapping one, face down, over the other. It was sort of a grotesque, pizza-oreo concoction.

Anyway, back on topic:
I've heard that In'n'Out is offering an actual veggie patty now, in addition to the regular Wish burger. Can anyone verify this? As a former carnivore, I'd love an excuse to go back to In'n'Out. Bible verses notwithstanding, it's a great little chain.
However, my old tastes leaned more toward Kwik Way for a truly disturbing burger and fries. If you ever get out to Oakland, look for the "Burgers - Shakes - Prawns" sign. Order the triple cheeseburger, which is essentially a friggin' heart attack in wax paper. It's like eating a greased croquet ball, only delicious! The fries are of the damp, greasy, soak-through-the-bag variety. Mmmmm. The ambience is also something else. It's a drive-in in a notoriously bad neighborhood. A gentleman once tried to sell me pitbull puppies while I waited for my order. He had them in his coat!
For something a little more healthy, I'd say Nation's or Oscar's (Berkeley) would be next in line.
Damn! I'm going to have to go home and make me a triple Boca burger!

Actually, if you look at the receipt, this is a 20x20. The sixteen patties are in addition to a 4x4.

You know, 10 years ago -- hell, even 5 years ago! -- I would have ordered and eaten that 20X20 just so I could say that I did. Now I look at that picture and the only thing I can think is "My wife would kill me."

This must be what adulthood is like, then.

This is a true story...one of our favorite movies is "The Big Lebowski". In the film, they talk about the "In & Out" Burger. A couple of the characters are later shown eating "In & Out" burgers in the back seat of a car. Being from the Midwest, we assumed that the chain was fictional...until we went to California on a trip and spied their advertising on a billboard! We just about freaked when we realized that we neglected to note the location, because we were driving so fast. So, we got off at the nearest exit and stopped at a Walgreens. A wonderful customer there gave my husband explicit directions to the nearest "In & Out" Burger...boy, were those burgers good! Can't wait for our next trip to California!

Lucky Bishop,
I don't ever "think" My Wife Will Kill Me". I made the mistake of setting up my retirement payments so that she will get the same amount each month after I have gone to that great BBQ in the Sky. The problem with that is that she would probably buy me a couple of those burgers a day...She tells me now and then when I have done something else stupid that MY Life Isn't Worth A plug Nickel, Dead or Alive !!!
Young Folks, Take a piece of advice from the Old Guy...eat the Burger while it's Hot !!

I left CA over ten years ago and I still miss my In -N- Out fix. I worked down the block from one in El Monte and use to have a 4x4 and large lemonade at least once a week. By the way, do kids still take the bumper sticks and removed the B and R from burger so it says In - N - Out Urge? Just wondering?

Discovered In-N-Out had propagated up the coast from LA and were in the bay area now, so when I was in SF two weeks ago I made it my mission to find one. Its been over a decade since my last double-double so I was eagerly anticipating the meal. Their website showed none in SF proper so I took the BART to eastbay and had dinner at the one in Union City. Yes I know there is one closer in Colma but something about eating in the "City of the Dead" bothered me so I went the extra distance. It was great but imagine my surprise when walking along Fishermans Wharf the next day and seeing an In-N-Out right in the middle of it!

I have been eating the protien burgers twice a week since I have been on Atkins. They are great. It's the only fastfood place that you don't mind tasting the meat.
