In need of Kayem's ---I need John Fox! Tue, 05/2/06 7:44 PM (permalink)
I am trying to find out how to get some Kayem Red's down here to South Carolina. I need a snap to my dog!
I have put in special request's at my local grocery stores, with no reply back.
I cannot find them on the internet. I have seen other hot dogs--weiners, frankfurters, etc., on Gourmet Amazon, but shipping is ridiculous.

Anyone know a way to get them to me, reasonably?

    roossy90,

I've had Kayem's a few times. It is a quality natural casing beef and pork frank. First time I had one was when I was in Maine on vacation. Next time was when my daughter went for freshman orientation at UConn. They grilled Kayem's for us. While in Conn. I stopped at a supermarket and bought a few franks loose from the deli. Grote & Weigel, Hummel's, Kayem's, Mucke's, and Deuchtsmacher. The G&W frank was bad (old and/or spoiled?) Hummel's was good, and Kayem's, Mucke's, and Deuchtsmacher were very similar, but better. All very good. I think I liked Mucke's best by the slimmest of margins, but these last 3 are at the same level. You can order Kayem's online at http:www.kayem.com. Click on their online store, and then I think you have to go to the Grocery Store section. They sell a 3 lb box of 24 (8 to a lb, natural casing) for $14.00.

Thanks John. I had seen the website, but for some reason had trouble getting into the store.

        One footnote:
Kayems only sells the regular/natural dogs online. I received an email, and they explained that the "plain" taste the same.
I tried them while in Maine, and they didnt taste the same to me.
        Anyway---
I may give them a try. He also indicated that the only place in the S.E., that carries Kayem Product is Albertsons in Fla, and only the natural dogs.

The other two of the big three red 'dog marketers (Old Neighborhood and Jordan's)also claim that the red 'dogs taste the same as the natural. I'm with Roossy; there's something different about the red 'Dogs.
FWIW, while I like the Kayems, given the choice I'll buy the Old Neighborhood NC reds.

Tara.. I did a little inverstigating, and found this meat place in Haverhill, MA. that ships Kayems, Pearls and Shields. They have the Kayems by the lb, and 10lb. boxs. (Natural Casing). They dont say if their Reds or not, so you may want to email them. Don't sound like it would be too much of a problem for them.. If I remember correctly, Kayems are made in Boston??? Well, they'd be in the same state atleast.. http://www.haverhillbeef.com/orderform.html
(If you scroll to the bottom, they have a question/contact box you can fill out).

Looking at the site, It seems that you have to pick them up in Haverhill. I did email them, and am waiting an answer.

Getting back to the Old Neighborhood brand dogs, We served them at the Hotel where I worked in Portland. They were natural, but they were pretty good.
I like the Jordans also. I wasnt too impressed with Shields. I had made a special trip to Portsmouth to try them at a diner.
It is odd that there are just no decent dogs in the southeast. I resort to Hebrew National when I want some, Which is most of the time.
They have something here called Carolina Pride Reds, which is commonly found at the restaurants. So-So.. not too impressed, but covered with chili and slaw, it doesnt matter.
I also miss the split top buns.
We serve the large Nathans dogs where I work now, and I keep telling my boss to get the split top, so all the goodies you top it with wont fall out. He didnt know what I mean, so I have to find a photo and print it for him. LOL

This is what I found on Amazon, and I remember a favorable post about Wardynski, but $45 bucks for 5 pounds of dog's kinda "bite's".

In that pic of Vic's it looks like a slice of white bread wrapped around the dog. Or am I misunderstanding the concept of a split bun? I've never been to New England, help me out here.

The New England hot dog roll looks like a NY style roll with the crusts cut off the sides. I guess it could look like a piece of bread wraped around the 'dog, but the crust on the bottom is intact.
FWIW, I grew up in the metro NYC area and prefer the NE style roll.

You know Cathy, I had the same question a few months back... Here's the thread discussing them:

That is the NE style roll.. I used to dislike them, then realized what a great idea it was.
They can hold almost any topping, relish, condiment.. any misc item with out the bun falling apart...
I have more respect for this "roll" now that I am not living in NE anymore, and do miss them dearly.
I totally contradict myself in a previous thread.. I admit that.
if you want "the works" on a dog, then this is the roll/bun to use.

The dog in Vic's picture is from Guida's in Middlefield CT

It's a 10 inch Martin Rosol dog made in New Britain CT.

                              Dogs are $2.50, and they run a 2 for 1 special on Mondays from 4PM to 8PM. 4 for $5 - What a country !
