Chain haters: don't bother. I know this is not the world's greatest burger and I don't care whether you think its' "roadfood" or not. In fact, it's not obvious there are burgers in there. But for a buck, it's a very tasty couple of mouthfuls of processed cheese food product or whatever they use and I rather enjoy them. Besides, I think a bag of them to munch on a long-haul car trip might be just the thing.

The original Mickey D cheeseburger/double are one of the nicer things when you are fairly broke....

Agreed, albeit I always recommend askign for it made custom and "hot off the grill" if indeed they have a grill.

The quality is much better in such cases

I agree with your in depth assessment...especially about the car trip thing. None of that irritating lettuce or tomato to plop off as you eat on the go.

I have eaten more than my share of $1.00 Double Cheesburgers. I'm sure that I'm not the first one to think of this but I usually ask for mine with Big Mac sauce. About half the price of a real Big Mac and as mentioned above, less stuff to drop on your lap when driving and eating.

Those cheeseburgers have helped me survive many Thursdays without going hungry. I get paid on Friday.

My pick for on-the-road Micky Ds fare, if one must.
Hit 'em when they're busy and the burgers are hot, and wrap it in a napkin to keep the grease off the gearshift knob. (or radio knobs and computer screen if you're on-duty).

Is the $1 double cheeseburger different from the regular double cheeseburger? I had one several years ago, but I don't remember how much it cost?

I think it's the only double cheeseburger they have on the menu, now. Order it with special treatment (mustard only, for example) and they make it fresh, every time.

I didn't know you could do that at McDonald's.

Sure they will. At least, they do here in the Midwest. The counter help always apologizes when I make a special order. "Sorry about the wait," they say. And I smile and say, "That's JUST why I ordered it that way."

Here in CA where we have a "diverse" population, getting across what you want (unless you and the counter person happen, just by chance, to speak the same language) is difficult. Besides, I rather like the cheese/pickle/ketchup mating of the standard product.

Same with FF's. Order some with "no salt". They will make fresh (as most other FF places do). If order is to go, ask for "extra salt packets". This really throws them for a loop.

The $1 double cheese has saved me a fortune when feeding a backseat full of hungry teenage boys. Let's face it, they rarely care about quality and our fab local burger joint(Rhea's of Roswell, home of the burger Nazi) would put me back $5 per kid more...and I admit, while I'm there, the occasional stray fry will find its way in my mouth.

Hey, I used to be a hungry teenage boy--and look where it got me (too close to 300 lbs).

I'm so not a chain hater, I just think McD's burgers have a weird taste/texture. I didn't really like them even as a kid, and then I had to try them again when I worked for McD's for a few months when I was 16. I still didn't like them. I like other things about McD's, but I don't know that I will ever get their burgers.

They're nothing to write home about, but in a pinch (either time or cash wise), quick service and cheap eats.. Works for me..

A couple double cheese can fill the spot when the day has been rushed and your not feeling particular, just hungry. Around here wednesday is .49c cheeseburger day at MickyD at least once a month I buy a couple bucks worth, eat a few and freeze the rest, a couple seconds in the nuker and you have a quick tween meals snack or a treat for visiting granpuppies..

I just can't eat that type of food anymore. I feel physically lousy afterwards. It seems that way with chain restaurant hamburgers. Maybe it's psychological, but after eating a hamburger from a regular restaurant, I don't usually feel ill at all. The last time I ate at McDonalds must have been at least 6 or 7 years ago. None of their food is any good, at least to me. But I can understand if you don't have any money, or time, which is something Americans seem to lack in increasing numbers nowadays, that you would be drawn to this burger.

I didn't know you could do that at McDonald's.

Here in CA where we have a "diverse" population, getting across what you want (unless you and the counter person happen, just by chance, to speak the same language) is difficult. Besides, I rather like the cheese/pickle/ketchup mating of the standard product.

You got to remember, California is in a world by itself! If You don't believe it, just think, this is the home of Miachel Jackon and a Terminator Governor!

None of their food is any good, at least to me. But I can understand if you don't have any money, or time, which is something Americans seem to lack in increasing numbers nowadays, that you would be drawn to this burger.

Even though they are another guilty pleasure, I often get an upset stomach from eating Big Macs myself, but I haven't had the problem with double cheeseburgers which are a better bargain anyway.

I have been downing the double cheeseburgers lately and I very rarely went to McD's before until I discovered the $1 double. Sometimes I get a few to take home and eat later. They nuke real nice. Another $1 treat I've been going for lately is the McChicken. Not a bad deal for a buck!

I've posted before about my liking Mac's double cheeseburger.I've been eating these things since i was a kid- just part of life. I'm really surprised this thread has gone so smoothly. For the longest time the double had become special order only, so i'm glad it's always on the menu again- that's all i get.

That dollar value menu McD's has is good if you're running short on time or money and are hungry. I probably visit McD's less than once every two months, but if I'm just hungry and on the road and need something fast that $1 double cheeseburger does it.
