Indio Tamale Festival Mon, 02/11/08 4:00 AM (permalink)
I hope this is a good place to post this... The LA Times had a piece about the Indio Int'l Tamale Festival. Dec 6-7. I know it's a ways off, but this is supposed to be one of the top 10 festivals in the country. It would be fun to get together as a Roadfood caravan. Everyone meets up somewhere, and maybe we all have special badges, stinking badges, so we can spot each other at the site. It's 26 miles east of Palm Springs.
Something to keep in mind. I'll be there.

What's with the Indio? Native American? East Indian? Independent? Other?

Oh, Indio, Schmindio, whatever. Look up Indio, CA on Wikipedia, they say something retarded about how "it's thought that the name Indio was chosen because there had been Indians there", pretty dumb stuff. I don't know. Not EAST Indian, I'll wager. I didn't name it! It's just INDIO, OK? Ha.

Gimme a break! Ys Easterners don't know all the cities in CA. I really did think it was an ethnic festival.

Indio: Low desert and full of date palms.

If I recall correctly, EliseT has attended this Indio tamalefest.

Yes, enginecapt is right, I think you can eat dates all day long in Indio. Until they are coming out of... well. But it sounds like fun, do take a look at the Wikipedia site, and the Indio Tamale Festival site, I don't know how much more Roadfoodish you can get!
The main thing is, I bring this up at this early date because it gives folks a chance to think about it well in advance, and ooh, maybe make hotel or resort reservations NOW. If this thing is as big as it appears to be, rooms may sell out months ahead. Hey, NYNM, calm down, I was not poking fun at easterners at all. Hell, I was born in Dallas, but spent years 5-10 in Danbury, where my Dad ran the Parole Dept at the FCI there.
            Yours,

I'd be interested in that. But I'm only an hour and a half away, so no worries about securing lodging.

I agree with NYNM-would have enjoyed a bit of background with the announcement of the festival. We have no idea what it is about, and just wanted an explanation. No need to get testy, my friend.

Elise did post a description of her visit to the Indio Tamale Festival some time ago. One of the Food or Travel channel's Foodie Programs, I think it was the one on Fairs and Festivals a couple of years ago...anyway they filmed the events and reviewed the festival. They filmed a sequence dealing the the "Strawberry Tamales" that looked outstanding.

Indio is home to the Date Festival also. It is a major fair, usually in February. If ever in SoCal during the winter I do recommend a day at the 'Fair' It is quite a spectacle.

PS I deleted the duplicate of this topic in another forum.

Well. What part of the word "Tamale" are people confused about? It's a tamale festival. You can go there and pig out on tamales. I have not been. It's supposed to be good. That's all the background I have for you guys. OK? I'm not being testy. Jeez. I'm always in a cheerful mood. I'm thinking about Hello Kitty right now.

Scott, if I were independently wealthy, I'd fly out to Indio for this festival lickety-split. (And to Austin, and to Mobile, et al.) I've been jonesing for good tamales ever since we left CA in December, and that is one Mex item that cannot be found around these parts of CT. I hope that you drive out for it and do a trip report for us! Chris

Ayersian, that has always been my dream, to tavel around the world to all the food festivals. Hmmm, that would make a good Travel Channel show.

The Tamale festival sounds fun to me.

I'm thinking I might want to get out there on the 6th, fill up, crash in a hotel, then go back on the 7th, eat more tamales, and drive back to LA. How do you say "Yummy!" en espanol?

Scott, Just a little Friendly advice...Not all members are familiar with SoCal place names and geography..Hell, not all SoCal members are familiar with them either. It would help avoid confusion or "duh?" questions, if you would be sure to include the area you are referring to when you list someplace. Putting it near but not in Palm Springs helps ! Confusion reigns when one has to decide if LA is Los Angeles or Louisiana...or USC is in Los Angeles or South Carolina????? You get the idea! Thanks

I have never been to the Tamale festival, but would like to go sometime...I Have been to the Date Festival, several times, and loved it. If you can visualize your Grandmother in a "I Dream of Jeannie" Hareum outfit..Hundreds of senior citizens dress in those outfits and serve as the fair's "Staff" The gentlemen all look like retiree's from one of the Shriner's Organizations....Pastel leisure suits and vests and Fez-type hats. ALL with LARGE NAME TAGS ! The fair really is fun, Ostrich and Camel racing, more food than I have seen at many county fairs, and always great weather. It is also the Riverside County Fair, so the events include stuff other than Date-related happenings.

Here's a Link to the festival website It just happens to be running this coming week !!!!!!!

Well, OK Al-TM-B, I gotcha, I guess. But I reference the "LA Times". Most folks would know this means Los Angeles, not Louisiana. I say it's 26 miles east of Palm Springs. I tell folks to look up Indio, CA on Wikipedia. I mention the "Indio Int'l Tamale Festival", THEY HAVE A WEB SITE. How much further must I go to avoid confusion?? Really. I can't believe what I'm hearing here about confusion. Good God. What part of "26 miles east of Palm Springs" is unclear? annpeeples says she "has no idea what it is about, and just wants an explanation". TAMALE: It's food, from Mexico. It's yummy. A FESTIVAL: People get together and celebrate stuff they like. Oy.

actually, the lobster liver, is also called "tamale." Maybe that's why in the US, the tamal (which is the singular for tamales) is called a tamale? I dunno, but in any event, for some reason, in the US, we call a "tamal" a "tamale," which is spelled and sounds the same as the tamale (the liver), of the lobster.
