Indy: Airport to IRP Fri, 12/31/10 10:23 AM (permalink)
There are plenty of threads about Indianapolis in this forum and I've checked a number of them, but I'm interested in a more specific area; namely, between the airport (Wyndham Hotel on Executive Drive) and Indianapolis (O'Reilly) Raceway Park for a visit next May.  Google Maps shows plenty of fast and chain food options but not much else.  Mug N Bun and Green Street Pub are possibilities if I'm willing to go out of my way and while The Library looks interesting I think the group I'll be with is more suited to the bar than the dining room.

The Wyndham does have a restaurant and I'm sure I'll probably visit it once or twice, but I'd definitely like to find some other local options in the immediate vicinity.  Thanks!

Walk, run, or hop a taxi to King Ribs Bar-B-Q on 4130 North Keystone Ave which is just east of downtown and a little north of I-70. Get a half rack of ribs with hot sauce and some chess pie ( or sweet potato pie if you get there early enough). You'll smell the ribs about a block before you get there, and yes, the red and yellow former car wash IS where you drive into. There might be a thick cloud of wood smoke, don't be afraid to drive into it, just follow the other cars...

When you order ribs or a pork sandwich into the little speaker, they will ask you " Hodamod"? and you answer either 'hot' or 'mild'; or, 'hod' or 'mod', if you're a wise ass. You'll get a couple slices of white bread for mopping the sauce. Be forewarned that if you get a sandwich instead of a rack or tips, that you need to eat the sandwich forthwith (the giant parking lot of the community center next door works for me) because if you wait til an hour down the highway at a roadside rest to open the box, the bottom half of the bun may be dissolved by the hot sauce, and you'll need a lot of napkins. But it will still be delicious.

Great food and easy to get to from any point in Indy, just east of the I-65/I-70 split. No drinks, but they have a couple of pop machines beside the speaker and menu. They have a couple of locations around Indy, but I go to this one every time I go through Indy twice a year. Enjoy!

King has a website but the only location listed is on 16th Street, which doesn't look to be too far from the airport area and might work out better.  It looks like it might be carry-out only, but if somebody else drives it's a great idea!

      Thanks!

Close by to the airport and Raceway Park:

Green Street in Brownsburg is a good choice. It is easy to get to being in a strip center right on the I-74 exit to Brownsburg.

My new favorite is Dawson's on Main in Speedway. It is on Main Street practically catty corner from the Indy Track. The building used to be the Main Street Drugstore when I lived there.

If you are looking for just a good pub for drinking beer and atmosphere give the Union Jack on Crawfordsville Rd at the I-465 and I-74 intersection in Speedway. They have some racing memorabilia decoration. One block further north and you could practically step into the house I grew up in.

Billy O'Neal's Irish Pub on West 10th Street (west of I-465) is a classic kind of place named after my late high school classmate.

They all have good tenderloins if that means anything.   Stay away from the Mug 'n Bun for tenderloins. It is good for burgers, onion rings and root beer. It's a classic car-hop drive-in that has been around since the 50s and was one of my high school hangouts.

          Brad,
There are a few King Ribs in Indy. We like the one on the eastside on Pendleton Pike within sight of the interchange with the 465 on the eastern perimter. A dump YES, But the Ribs and Rib Tips can't be beat anywhere in Indiana.  We visited the one downtown...just west of center city, and it was good also, plus it a room to sit down too.
