Instead of Pictures...

on the Home page of a restaurants web site how about a video? I put one on mine today and would like comments. And the music sucks! Will even take music suggestions.

www.bbqcorner.net then scroll to the bottom.

Nice touch. I like the idea that you have to click a link to see it. So many sites these days blast you with video and sound when you first open their home page.

I guess my concern would depend on the make-up of your target audience. I am stuck with dial-up service. I just waited 5 minutes for my PC to tell me it was loading and had hit the 9% mark, when I stopped the process.
If you know that your people are generally broadband equipped, then you have a good thing going. If many are in the same shape I am, the frustration of slow-load will negate any benefit of the video.

    The food looks awesome.

The music - seriously dude, it's like your food died and they are showing a video montage of it at its funeral. Horrible.

Sorry, Al, but I knew that it would be very slow loading on the dialup connections. The pictures on the video are the same ones that are in The Gallery.

I have no idea what music that is. It came with the program. I'm in the process of downloading a new song as we speak. It's got a little more swing to it.

    Hi Slick,

Your food looks delicious! However, I would agree that the music on the video is less than appealing. Go to itunes or walmart music or somewhere, and find an instrumental version of the song "Simply Irresistable," by Robert Palmer. It's an exciting song, and would go with that exciting food.

I think that you may want to get some legal counsel before putting any more music on your site. ASCAP or some other group that gathers royalties for musicians may go after you for their cut.

This enters the realm of copyrights and the limitations on their use without permission or compensation for the holder of the copyright. You should probably err on the side of caution here, unless you want to start writing checks to Robert Palmer's agent or some other artist's agent.

I loved both the music (which I was sure was Delbert McClinton; now I've got to check out T. Graham Brown), the references to Memphis's Tater Red's shop on Beale, and most of all your Q. Congrats. Tedbear is right as the copyright owner may someday ask for a share of every plate you sold since airing the video. You may find permission might be as simple as offering free BBQ whenever the artist rolls through your neck of the woods.

    Slick,

As I am on dial up your video is about a 2 hour download. I did not see any streaming option.
Actually streaming is getting a bit old hat and I would recommend podcasting. Call it the Slick's BBQ report or something. Do it weekly and keep it short. A good example for this sort of thing is "The Minimalist" video the NY Times does weekly.

Of course I am still downloading your 45MB video, but if it does have music in it that is not yours or that you have not paid royalties for, you are in danger of huge lawsuits.

You may think of doing Internet take-out, your food does look very good. Just by being on Roadfood you have a world wide presence. Take advantage of it, I would love some of your Texas BBQ in about a 3 pound tub and shipped direct in dry ice. I don't mind paying for shipping if it is good authentic regional food.

I do a lot of Internet take-out and I do not think I am the only one.

    Think about it.

    Best Regards,
    Greyghost

I don't know what DSL speed I'm at but loading on my wife's machine it was about a 40 second load. I don't think I can do anything about the speed because the program I used was some freeware I ran across. Anything dealing with music or video using dial up is going to be a long DL.

I also appreciate everyone's concern about a possible copyright infringement, but you may rest assured when the video was produced successfully I fired off an e-mail to Capital with the URL of my site. I guess they'll tell me if I should continue to use that song, or not.

Greyghost, I have done this twice in the past. It was the biggest PITA because I don't have the room to store anything.

MilwFoodlovers, T. Graham makes some good music if you're into blusey kinda stuff. Moon Shadow Road and Wine Into Water are my two favorites and Blues of the Month Club is very high up there.

I'd suggest converting the video to Macromedia Flash to increase the speed. Degrade it a bit if need be, but as mentioned above, you probably get more people on dialup then broadband. Another option would be adding a slideshow designed for dialup, so a lower connect speed user has an option. (Have your website detect the connect speed and offer the proper format to view)...

Alot of folks are getting broadband today, mainly at their offices... Home users by far are still on dialup. They do their 'high speed' use at the office, and seem to only subscribe to the lower cost at home mainly to check their mail.

    I like it.

I like it a lot. Memphis Women and good fried Chicken.....Your choice of music is great.

My home computer is as slow as Christmas...but I am aware of it. I know it's slow, and so I don't generally try to load videos or even pages with lots of photos, and I bet most other folks on a dial-up are the same way.

Got a fast connection at work, though!

    Nice. I like it.

T Brown is a great choice, I'm running DSL so it's an almost instant video...I watched it all, but more out of profesional courtesy then anything..it wouldn't be something I would normally do. With less then half of households using high speed connections it's probablly a good bet that most people won't watch it, so the question of what you're paying for bandwidth comes into play...it seems most of what I've read says simple is better when it comes to websites...of course this comes from someone who I know, still needs to finish my own site...

I agree, even on dsl the download took awhile and kept interupting to download more and the gallery was just as clear with more information (like what your looking at) All in all, if the copyright/royalty thing is covered I'd say you have a great addition to your site.... just don't lose the galleries

I am on a cable modem. I checked this a couple of times and it took 5 to 10 seconds from when I clicked the link until the video started. You might want to put on note below the link that it might be slow for dial up users.

I guess I'm thinking that the link is there so you can click it or not. I've added (in text) the file size this morning so there shouldn't be any surprises. The galleries are staying and I'll probably be adding more in the future.

Cost on bandwidth is zero because I bought 10,000 MB of space from the host on their business plan. I had my brother-in-law on a different DSL plan load it and it took a minute and ten seconds. Probably too long for many people to stay with it, but it's there for folk that do.

    Thanks for the input.

You can speed it up by making the video size a little smaller. It looks great though. On my cable connection, it started within 5 seconds.

If you ever get out of the food biz, you might try making videos, you really have a talent for it.

I don't know if you are familiar with the Internet Archive, but you can get a lot of open domain audio and video there. Here is the link. http://www.archive.org/

Slick, upload the video to www.youtube.com (site will convert it to Flash). See if it's any quicker via that format. They give you linking info to use on your website (in a player), and best of all It's Free!
