Iowa Standout Wrestler Refuses to Wrestle Girl in State Tournament

As many of you know, HS & College Wrestling is BIG in IA. As big or bigger than Football. A young man with a 35 & 4 record coming into the tournament refused to wrestle a female wrestler in the State Tournament citing his strong religious beliefs. He defaulted the match to her but will be able to compete in the next round, but it's highly unlikely he will be able to get to the Championship Round. It's the 1st time a girl has qualified for the State Tournament in it's 85 year history. Actually, there are 2 girls in the tournament. It's great the girls are that proficent enough to make the Tournament but??? My daughter was a HS State Swimming Champion 4 times and went to USC (CA) on a Swimming Scholarship, but there's no way she could compete with Elite Male Swimmers. This raises the Question--Should Heavy Contact Sports like Wrestling & Football be Coed? According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 6,000 girls competed in wrestling in 2009-10 — compared with nearly 275,000 boys. Though most states require girls to wrestle boys, California, Hawaii, Texas, Washington and Tennessee sponsor girls-only high school wrestling tournaments. I don't know, but a Wrestling Crazy state like IA probably has enough Female Wrestlers to have their own tournament. What do you think?

I applaud the young man for his convictions. Some things need to be kept seperate.
