Irritating little things

I hate when Companies give their phone number with a prefix then a word, I still have to search my phone for the corresponding number! Those codes you have to enter on your computer to make sure your not a spammer, can barely make them out. How bout you?

It was always a pain in the, well, neck, to me, but that's all. Then, one day while doing a call-in program on a public broadcasting radio station in Columbus the other guest gave a telephone number for people to call for information on fishing. The number was 1-800- WILDLIFE. A few minutes later someone called in to point out that he was unsighted, and that the use of such numbers made it very difficult for those such as himself. While I didn't like that spell-a-word stuff, it had never occurred to me that it was such a problem, and I've been fighting it ever since.

If companies choose to use words, they should follow up with the actual number. You know.... like saying EVOO followed by extra virgin olive oil. Well maybe not like that.

I have never once successfully entered the code on a website without having to try at least two more times to get it right. You'd think they'd use a readable font if they want you to enter it correctly. I used to hate phone numbers that were words, but ever since text messaging on a phone without a QWERTY keyboard I've gotten pretty good at it. I don't, however, remember the last time I saw one that did not have the numbers printed under the letters, or that did not say them out loud after saying the word.

Ditto on the phones that don't have the alpphabet printed on the keypads. The interesting thing on those pesky "CAPTCHAS" is that they are now putting the public to work doing the OCR proofing for words the OCR can't read from scanned documents. Every time you you "decode" one of those type, you're in essence doing somebody's monotonous work that they would have to pay for.

On a totally different track... I love the work my two Scottish Terriers do, keeping the large yard 'Gopher and Mole Free'. They really try to keep the Orchard clear of those pests. HOWEVER, The mud they track into the house, and the efforts we make to get rid of the "Mud-Boogers" that result when they vent a Mole-Tunnel are a bit much. I won't add that the humps and bumps I get on the Mower as I cross the tracks they haver uncovered have given me some severe jolts!! Yep, dead moles can be a real pain in the butt at Bowen's orchard ! We Love our Dogs, But they keeps us ALERT !

When I was a kid, the town I lived in gave a dime for pairs of gopher feet. The trap was ugly. Most of the time caught them by a leg. And I know they suffered. But, these rodents were such a problem, I guess it was justified.

You should see my West Highland WHITE Terrier when he gets muddy! He considers squirrels to be a food group, and catches the occasional bat.

CTF- Just for your info, That's Demi, The female of the pair. She is smaller and seems much 'shyer' at times, but she is the Alpha Dog of this team. She is relentless when she starts to rip open the near-surface tunnels, and does everything but kick Duffy into using his larger Jaw muscles to act as a DitchWitch to assist. When she grabbed a posseum in a hollow log not long ago, she was tugging it by th neck to Duffy to let him snap his large jaws to finish the critter off. She then carried it all over the yard to show us what SHE had done! Don't let that "Woe is me look on her face fool you for a minute"!!

On speaking of phone numbers and dogs and pests, ants irritate me. My house is clean, but recently I've been finding a few ants around the back of the house near the piano. I put a couple of ant baits, the Combat ones around the back of that area of the house, hidden but on the floor. Yesterday morning my daughter finds the dog chewing on a Combat ant hotel. In a panic, I take it and see the it was not broken into, but badly chewed up, I snipped it open and found the bait still intact but I suspect the dog ate a little. I had another box of the Combat and immediately called the number on back, (all numbers, no letters). I swiftly spoke to a rep there at the Medical Emergency section, on a Sunday morning. She said those hotel baits are similar to the poison strength of those dog "pesticide" drops we put on our poochies once a month(Frontline, K-9,). There is a food bait in the Combat which the dog was attractec to. She assured me that the most the dog would probably have a little upset stomach but that would be it and not to worry. I watched the dog all day, she was fine, and moved all the baits off the floor even though I thought I hid them very well from the dog. What a Sunday morning.....
