Irving's Deli (PASTRAMI !) more pics added 12-12 Sun, 10/26/08 3:26 PM (permalink)

On Oct. 4th, 2008, I suggested to my sis that we stop here, as it was sort of on the way to Newark Aiport (I was flying off for my 2 week L.A./Vegas romp)...

It's modeled after Katz's deli in NYC
Here's my half PASTRAMI/half BRISKET sandwich

Anybody's mouth watering yet? I bet YOURS is, BAAH BEN !! Mine is, as it's been 3 weeks since I've had that sandwich! ( I'm in "pastrami withdrawal" mode now!)

IRVING'S DELI, Livingston, NJ... on Route 10, in Toys R Us center

There is also an Office Depot in that shopping center, 575 Route 10 E
973-994-5100; www.irvingsdeli.com ..(website is going thru renovation

Mapquest for directions; from the Garden State Parkway, one would take Exit 145 for Route 280 West; it's about 8 miles or so from there
in north Jersey , about 40 minutes west of NYC (traffic permitting)

Here's another view of my PASTRAMI/BRISKET combo; I spread out the pastrami meat a little nicer for you guys; thick, hand cut, a la Katz's.

Of course, we gave the counterman a few bucks to reward him for the little meat samples he was giving us .
The owners are Mark and his cousin, who grew up across the street from each other in Paramus, NJ. "Irving" is just folklore, there is really no Irving. Irving's has been open a year, and this is their first restaurant venture.... (KUDOS guys! Great job!)

Choice of ordering at the counter, or getting waiter service.
We did the counter thing, but still left a decent tip at the table, for whoever got stuck cleaning up all our mess!

Interior of IRVING'S DELI; we sat in the self service area

The owners seems to take a real liking to us, bringing us tons of samples to the table!!! (and these were NO sample sized, either!)

It was quite flattering, and almost embarrassing, cause we noticed the other tables nearby were barely getting anything.
This was not even everything! As they next came by with SWEET POTATO LATKES, and little "PIGS in BLANKET" hot dogs. (with a brand "made special for Irving's)

It was nice to see that IRVING'S supports local north Jersey businesses, as you can see from the BOYLAN'S SODA fountain.

Boylan's Soda, Moonachie, NJ.... first time I've ever seen it in soda fountain form... it's like the Dr. Brown's brand.

For starters, I had my camera out, so the owners may have wanted to make a good impression on us.
That's what I thought at first; but then I was asked "How can I reach you?", (I gave him my "e-mail" card) and he joked about looking for me in the AC Casinos.
I think they just geniunely liked us! Never got treated better!

And my SIS was VERY skeptical at first, as she is such a tough pastrami critic (like I am)
But from the moment we parked the car (and she saw other cars there, etc)to the moment she went "MMMMM" when she had the first gratis pastrami slice, up till the final moment when we left, she was totally convinced!
Irving's was the REAL THING!!!!

I was so glad to see sis enjoying her sandwich! That means even more to me than whether I enjoy mine!
And BTW, I loved the pastrami.
I liked the brisket; it was a tad dry in spots; good overall..

This was all at 3 pm. I flew out to L.A. right after this meal.
My plane landed at 9:30 pm...(it would have been 12:30 am EST)
I was still SO STUFFED!!!!!
I had to scrap my original plans of having some beef ribs from Baby Blues BBQ in Venice for a late night meal.

Irving's is a great place to go before a long airplane flight, or before a prison sentence! It's a great "final supper"!!

That's Katz's Deli style; something to the effect that one has to show the ticket to legally get out of the place...cause all the food orders are supposed to be marked off on it...
If I remember correctly, they gave us a regular check,anyway...

        Hey Ellen, Welcome back!

Good luck to the guys from Irving's. Based on your report they should be around for many years. Nice pics, great looking(hand cut)pastrami. I will put them on my list.

Edit: The health salad looks really good.

5 Bucks says you get an email asking you out to Dinner.

I love good brisket that's been smoked or barbequed, but for some reason is really dislike the brisket in Jewish delicatessens -- and even the brisket my grandmother used to make.

It's actually a full sandwich, but I had them make it with pastrami on one side, and brisket on the other...

My sis went for the "straight pastrami"
PASTRAMI SANDWICH (sorry, but I forgot the price)

I had taken paper menus out (with prices, etc) but seemed to have misplaced/lost them during my 2 week travels...

Ooohhhh! Ellen, I want your sandwich! It is so beautiful. As funny as it sounds, can't get a good deli sandwich here in Jerusalem.

                    Hi Joerogo!
So nice to hear from you..!
I sure hope Irving's is around for awhile... you know how it goes with other factors, like changing demographics, or the lease rent escalating... (at least it's NOT in a real pretty shopping center, as that would cost even more for them $$$$$)
In those real nicely landscraped strip shopping centers, it's mostly only major chains like Panera Bread that can afford a spot.
Or Moe's , or Baja Fresh, etc...

                    ellen

p.s. No e-mail dinner offer yet... but it certainly felt flattering to be liked... (for whatever reasons, they really warmed up to me and sis)

I grew up in Livingston in the sixties- have not been there in about 20 years- I think that where Irvings is now there used to be old farms- most of the time i hate to learn of sprawl, but judging form those pics Irvings is worth it!

Ellen - How much is the pastrami sandwich? It's a decent size..Not as big as the Carnegie. It looks like they've duplicated Katz's decor..The meat looks WONDERFUL! But, it looks like it's been machine sliced..Fine by me. Do you think there's enough customers to support the business? Was that a schmear of tuna salad? Chicken salad? Whitefish salad? I'm guessing chicken....Al the salads, salw, etc. looks terrific! Tough choice for me when I get up to NJ..Harold's or Irving's....

Michael - I don't like the Jewish brisket made with the sauce in the home. I grew up with that. But, I do like the brisket in the deli. They don't braise it. But, I also agree that the best brisket is found at a "Q" place...My favorite..Arthur Bryant's. All it needs if it's good and moist is maybe some salt..No sauce...nuthing...

Ellen..great pictures..This place looks very, very good! I hope they are successful.

Great pics, Ellen. You're so good at what you do. I noticed a dish in one of your pictures that I used to know as, "health salad". Is it still called that nowadays?
I sure miss that refreshing and zingy salad I used to love as a young man living in NY.

And this is what I call hitting the Roadfood.com JACKPOT ! That's when 4 of my favorite Roadfood buddies post replies all in a row!
Rpalmer, Baah Ben, Signman and Twinwillow !

BAAH BEN: I believe those sandwiches were $12.95 apiece.
I seem to have lost their menus, and their website only goes to their front page for now; no menus listed. Sandwiches were a drop cheaper and smaller sized than the Carnegie and Harold's... (but yet still big enough, as I found myself getting too full to even finish it all)

That was tuna salad in the pic; a huge sample sized they brought over to our table, unsolicited.

TWINWILLOW: Sis and I still refer to it as health salad; I, for one, have'nt heard of any different names for it.
(it's nice some things still remain the same, huh?!?)

                                UPDATE ! I just found Irving's MENU !!
Looks like we paid $12.95 for the pastrami, and $14.95 for the 2 meat combo.... (even though the combo did not look any bigger...but like you once said, Baah Ben, we've got to pay the guy a little more cause he's gotta slice TWO different meats) (LOL)
So if both people want pastrami/brisket combos, they are better off ordering 1 pastrami, and 1 brisket, and splitting it up amongst themselves. (and pocketing the 4 bucks difference)

I love the fact that they don't get you for $6.95 for the MATZOH BALL soup, like too many places do!!
In all the hoopla, I forgot to try the soup! (next time!)(and the split pea sounds good, too)

p.s. It IS nice that they offer a "half sandwich on FULL bread" for $7.95.

I forgot to mention the pickles. They look perfect.

                                      Love your reports!

Nice report, Ellen, with good pictures of the interior of the restaurant to give the reader a feel for the ambiance.

I was looking at the sandwich photos, and it occurred to me that both sides were brisket. Pastrami'd brisket, and plain. One could add corned-beef brisket, and have a Jewish deli brisket triple-decker!

Hey Ellen---great job! Will have to add to my to do list.
Is the health salad also called clear salad or am I thinking of something else?

Ellen, as always just loved your report as it brings me back to my younger years growing up in NJ, and later, nursing school days in NYC.

Just can't get that kind of deli meats or ambiance out here in CA. If I am missing something in the Sacramento area, someone will tell me, I am sure. A couple local (one is leaving) deli's try, but it's not the same.

How nice to enjoy your trips through your eyes and tastes buds. Now, I am hungry!

Thank you and know that you are appreciated.

Welcome back Ellen, wondered where you've been? You can have the brisket; I'll take the pastrami and a couple of those pickles. As usual, another great report. See you this weekend.

Ellen, Let me apologize right up front for this post.

I am heading to North Plainfield tomorrow and I wanted to see how far I was from Irving's. Now whenever I hear the name Irving, there is only one thing I think of. I checked youtube, and guess what?

I will probably end up at Charlie's Pool Room tomorrow, but i will hit Irving's when I work in Chatham.

AHHHH, can't get it out of my head!!

Would you believe, that despite my roots, I'd never heard of this Irving ballad before! And judging from the comments, looks like it's been around since the 1960's perhaps?!?
LOL at the lyrics :"big, fat Irving! The 142nd fastest gun in the west"....

And it's pretty impressive that the Youtube poster got 16,000 views to that Irving video.

AHHHH, can't get it out of my head!!

oe if you are in North Plainfield tomorrow for lunch or breakfast check out nanny's kitchen and let me know what you think. Everything is homemade, she is very friendly and I would love to hear what others think of the place. Here is the information about it. Not sure if you'll see this before you head out there or not. But if you do check it out

Fatty, I'm working on North Street, and I tried Nanny's before. I would say they are some of the nicest people I ever met. I had an omelet that was super, large and delecious. My buddy had some funky pancake or waffle, very good.

I believe it was one of your past posts that sent me there. A belated Thank You.
