Is Your Nearest City On This List? Fri, 08/28/09 4:25 PM (permalink)
Men’s Health magazine has ranked Jacksonville as the eighth worst city in the country when it comes to the sheer number of fast food restaurants and the number of people who frequent them more than seven times a month.
On the magazine’s chart, the top 10 actually is the bottom 10. And Arlington, Texas grabbed the No. 1 spot for the city with the most McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell and similar eateries and the percentage of people in its population who eat there. At the other end of the spectrum, the city that ranked 100th, or did best on the chart, was Buffalo, N.Y.
Others in the top 10 included Anchorage, Alaska in the No. 2 spot, followed by Charlotte, N.C.;  Sioux Falls, S.D.; Raleigh, N.C.; Indianapolis; Fremont, Calif.; Jacksonville, Lexington, Ky. and Wichita, Kan.
According to a release, the magazine’s editors first counted the number of fast food restaurants per capita and used data from Experian Simmons to determine what percentage of those cities’ populations frequently ate at those restaurants. They also used SimplyMap data to determine where people eat fast food seven times or more a month and then added in obesity statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hailing from the DC area originally, I'm having a hard time figuring out where a lot of fast food places are, now Rockville Md. every other store is FF.

From a "men's health" perspective, what conclusions are to be drawn from this?  Should I avoid those cities?  I knew there must be a reason I've avoided Arlington, TX all these years.  Should I move from Wilmgington, DE (number 78 thank you very much.)  If I visit Anchorage, will I come home morbidly obese with a craving for Taco Bell?

The why of this appears to be missing.  Cultural, socio-economic, marketing reasons?  Overall, the northeast looks somewhat under represented compared to the rest of the country.  Are these the cities themselves or SMA's?  Whether or not you are counting the cities' suburbs would have an effect on the numbers.  I need more info.  Oh, never mind.  I know it's just filler for a magazine...

Huh, Miami is #97.  That must be the City of Miami, not Miami-Dade county.

I can't imagine eating FF 7 times or more a month.
Is that really a valid measure?

There are people who eat lunch every work day at either Subway, BK, McDonald's - or wherever.  It is convenient, cheap, and - for whatever reason, popular.

I think it is amusing that much-maligned Orlando ranks #80/100.  I have said on more than one occasion, that when people think "Orlando," they are really thinking about the hideousness that is Lake Buena Vista or I-Drive.  There are some very good options for Orlando - they just aren't where anyone visiting Orlando would want to go.  If the study truly measures the number of "local" Orlando people visiting fast food franchises, then the indication should be that there are some good "local" options for food.  However, I am sure that if you analyzed data to include both residents and visitors, then there would be a greater leaning towards corporate fast food.

If these guys just put the names of 100 cities on pieces of paper, then pulled those names out of a hat, would we know any different?

I wonder if Madison's #43 ranking is in any way skewed by the 40,000 students at the UW.

#59 here.  I often wonder if it would be easier to stick to a diet if there weren't so many fast food places here.  Plus the advertising - mail inserts, TV/radio commercials, billboards.  A 5-min walk from my front door, we have: McD's, KFC/A&W, Carl's Jr, Panda Express, Togo's, Arby's and Taco Bell.

Well San Antonio ranks 16th.I didn't see Schertz or New Braunfels on the list. Lot of chains  like Culver and Freddy's Custard have come here in recent years. Carl'sJr.is back. They were in San Antonio, and then reached some deal with Burger King and pulled out. Now there's a Carl's Jr.on Nacogdoches Road and O'Conner, and they are building a new one right next door to Whataburger on IH-35 North and Topperwein road.Even Weiner Schnitzel is back in town. How ever there is the local San Antonio burger chain
Chester's Hamburgers and Lone Star Cafe which sells burgers and other things.

Having lived there most of my life, I'm still trying to figure out why Yonkers (which is just north of The Bronx) comes in at 73, while NYC is at 77?
