Is it just me? Re: Those cheeseburger sausage dog things at the gas station...

Is it just me??

Or are those messed up looking cheeseburger/sausage/hot dog things... absolutely, amazingly, delicious!!!

I especially like the ones that have been on the rotator thing too long.. all nice and crusty...

I just can't resist them...

I also like to get the oldest hot dog off the thing if I'm getting a gas station dog...

You guys may think i'm crazy, but I've got no hot dog stand nearby... maybe thats why my tastes have adjusted to Midwest product!

Dom

P.S. I boiled some in beer last night and they were mmmm, mmm good! That and a little cajun seasoning. And I ate them on the Snuggles buns from the pita people. I wish they were cheaper, I really liked it.

I have never been drunk enough to try one.

They look pretty scary ... I'll bet they are good and salty too.

I stop at the Pilot Travel Centers quite frequently and they always have them in many different flavors.  I have tried them several times and they are just OK in my personal opinion.

mmmm... so good and mmmmm.... so salty...

I will admit, you have to have some guts to try one the first time, they are about as unappealing looking as they come... but they are so good!

I think I will go to the local gas station and dine on one for lunch today! MMMMmmm... meaty!

You live in Nebraska.  That's a given.

Along with the typical dogs, brats, and cheddarwursts the Kwik Trip (in Iowa the name is Kwik Star but it's the same company) stores around here have these things called "Tornados" IIRC.  They're like a tortilla that's been modestly stuffed, rolled, and fried and they're also kept in the roller machine.  They're OK as a between-meals, late-night, or on-the-road snack but nothing special.

Burger meat shaped like a hot dog.  I had one from a vendor at an electronics show about 15 years ago.  It was not good.

I made a post, or started a thread about these, about a year or so ago. hey, I kinda like em also. You skeerdys don't try them! It will keep the price down. My last one was $1.25.

Apparently someone is not fond of them! My score went to -2 because of this post!

Don't hate me because of my unsophisticated tastes! Isn't it okay to appreciate cheap gas station food sometimes?

Doesn't mean I don't like to whip up a panko and blue cheese encrusted filet with a little red wine sauce...!

Thanks John! I think I did it. Message options... da. Why didn't I look there?

Dt, I think your back on the + side .

I am thinking I might have started a thread about these burger dogs sometime back? I would like to try making some but am not sure what keeps the shape of these things. Hmmm, a blue cheese burger dog might be good?
Joe

Edit; Yep, I found it. "burger dogs, anyone selling them". I asked this in the pro section. I don't think anyone is selling them. Made right w/ some good meat and cheese would be a good seller from a hot dog cart... I think???

You got me back to 0! That is all I wanted... Just not to be in the hole over burger dogs!!

The blue cheese sounds like a good idea!

I would think you'd just kind of roll it like play doh until its in a tube... maybe cook it in a cast iron skillet rolling frequently?

Or you could just go to a truck stop...

Dt, it said 2 when I looked. Maybe I was looking at the wrong thing? See if you can find my old thread from the new search. It works well I think.

Blue cheese, jalapeno jack, swiss, sharp cheddar... the list could get long. The neat thing is that the cheese is mixed in the burger dog.

I did a google for "burger dog" and some interesting stuff came up. One guy said to freeze the meat for about 45 mins. He did not have cheese in his burger dog though. Another guy wrapped burger meat around a hot dog.

Nobody hates you. We are kind and gentle souls.

Panko & blue cheese encrusted filet of...? Beef? I was first thinking think fish, because of the panko. But no red wine sauce for fish. Panko (breadcrumbs), for filet mignon? Just curious.

I do not know about these cheeseburger sausage, hot dog shaped thingies. They might be outlawed in NJ.

I like anything that spins around on rollers at 7-11 or the local gas station as long as they have no peppers or onions in them. Don't do them often but they are good.

Oh my... some chopped onions and jalapenos, along w/ a good sharp cheddar, rolled up in some 80/20 chuck, cooked med rare, on a good toasted bun... oh my!!!

AKA... Texas Style Chuck Wagon Cheese Burger Dog

Kinda long name but hey... it would sell!

Drpep, of coarse you can order yours w/o the onions and peppers.
Joe

Oh everyone, please don't ask for ketchup... mustard or mayo would be fine though. :~)

Hey Joe,

It's not a hot dog, so ketchup is acceptable.

But... no way would ketchup be acceptable on a Texas style Chuck Wagon Cheese Burger Dog!

But... put whatever you want on a Roller Derby Burger Bog.

Hmmmm... are you trademarking that?

I've been on here so much lately because I bought a concession trailer... I might just have to experiment...

The things are just so ugly though!

____

As for the filet, yes, i was talking beef! MMMMM.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Blue-Cheese-Crusted-Filet-Mignon-with-Port-Wine-Sauce/Detail.aspx

This was really good.. I used a sweet red wine instead of a port and I also sauteed some mushrooms in the pan before making the sauce, took them out, then added back at the end..

It was so good! I don't know if I'll do it with a filet again, I think this would dress up a strip quite nice!

As for the panko part - absoulutely amazing! I've done the blue cheese by itself and it just wasn't what I was looking for. The Panko cut the flavor nicely and the crunch that it added to the  top of the steak was great.

I don't think if I hadn't made it that I would have known just what made the topping so perfect.. it works so well!

____

Looks like I am actually up to 7 points now! Thanks for all the positive ratings!!

I could easily make that filet along with a appetizer, salad and desert.  The truth is that even 'pros' break down and will sometimes eat some junque...
I wrote it that way so that I will feel better about this admission.  I love Big Bomb burritos when making a quick pit stop along the lonely highway.  TVP is a good thing (textured vegetable protien).
The problem I have with the pictured cheeseburger dog is that the cheese looks real solid, like it will not melt at normal cooking temperatures.

But much rather would eat a jumbo Nathans or any natural casing beef weenie!

I am into trying to make an upscale version. Ground chuck, good cheese, and whatever. I think the trick is to cook them from frozen. They stay in shape that way.

Oh, jalapenos or green chiles would add that extra kik. :~)
