I haven't seen a single pic of an actual Italian Steak Sandwich in this thread, so I'll contribute a few from when I was still in the KC area.

This was the first ISS that I had, from a teeny tiny drive-thru called Italian Gardens To Go that was on NW Barry Rd, by the Zona Rosa mall.  They've closed down, but apparently they're looking to open a new location in Overland Park.

Lettuce seemed to be an odd thing to put in the sandwich, all mixed up with the marinara like that, but whatever:

Another I had was from L.C.'s Hamburgers.  They have two menus, one with burgers and one with a ton of different stuff like reubens and pork fritters. Naturally when I saw they offered an ISS, I had to try it:

It had barbecue sauce instead of marinara, which isn't unusual for Kansas City, I guess, but not what I was expecting.  And as you can see, it was on a standard hamburger-style bun.  It was... fine, but if I were still living in the area I'd definitely be sticking with the burgers at L.C.'s.

Ketteract,  Nice pics.  Thanks for confirming that BBQ sauce is used.

Ashleyjohn, What recipe do you use at home?  Trying to find the recipe is how I found this forum.

Adley

Hi there SouthKC, my name is Adam. My Uncle Sammy was the owner of Wimpy's. My family still has the recipe for the Italian steaks and we make them frequently for family gatherings. I am always flattered when I hear people remember Wimpy's as I grew up going there a lot as a child and have fond memories of it. It was a wonderful place to eat. Great food and fun. I miss it and him a lot. He passed away from cancer years ago. He was a good man. If you want to know more info feel free to hit me back.

Would you please share the recipes for the Italian Steak Sandwiches and the sauce?  My husband and I were both raised one them and we raised our family on them.  We sure do miss them.  Appreciate it!!!!!!

FYI, Italian Gardens To Go reopened last month at their new location in Overland Park, if anyone wants to try their version of an ISS!  I imagine it hasn't changed from before.

never had one with bbq sauce on it. that would make it a Kansas city steak instead of an Italian steak.

Yeah, by the Zona Rosa mall.  It closed down some time ago.

I'd be curious to see pics of the ISS from their new location - to see if it's changed any!

Hey All, new to Roadfood.com, I joined just so I could post on this forum! In straightening out some closets, I just came across a memory mass card for Sammy who was the owner of Wimpy's...... and the memories of his Italian Steaks prompted me to search the internet for the sandwich and the sauce recipe!! He and my father grew up together and were good friends in the "old neighbourhood". Growing up, we were steady patrons of Wimpy's, driving from 119th every Saturday to get our weekly fix of the Italian Steaks and tator tots! I saw that there was some earlier correspondence with Sammy's family...did he ever share the recipe and sandwich construction? Just wondering..I would love to not only walk down memory lane but taste it too!

I, too, grew up in KC, and am back in town for a few days.  I wanted an Italian Steak for lunch, but all of my old favorite places are gone so I looked on the web and found this site.  Rather incredibly, my motel is just a block from Italian Gardens to Go on 119th street, so I walked over.  I had a nice chat about the 'old days' with one of the owners while I waited for my order to come up.  The sandwich wasn't exactly as I remembered (well, what ever is?), but it was huge and mighty good.  "Thanks" to those who recommended them.  Be sure to ask for extra tomato sauce, though.  All in all, I'm very pleased with their version of one of my favorite food memories.

I noticed yesterday that In-A-Tub, on North Oak, has Italian Steaks on their menu, but I was there for their weird and wonderful tacos and didn't sample one.

Seriously?!  That's the last place I'd expect that.  You simply must go back, preferably with a camera... I'd do it but I'm thousands of miles away :(

HyVee can order Italian steaks from Scimeca's for you.  They are made with pork not beef BUT the taste IS THERE!!!!  I made the red sauce that is on this forum and added a tablespoon, or so, of bbq sauce added the hoagy bun and the veggies and we just sat back and enjoyed not just the sandwich but the walk down memory lane.
