Hey, although I already had one corned beef brisket in the refrigerator, I found a sale at one of the supermarkets here for first-cut corned beef briskets at $1.99 a pound and I bought four of them today for the freezer. Each one is between 3 1/2 and 3 3/4 pounds. There's eventually going to be a whole lot of hash going on. Hmmm. I wonder about corned beef and cabbage runzas.

I somehow find a way to be on the deck at Tommy Condon's Bar in Charleston for St. Patrick's Day. The beer flows, the corned beef and cabbage is wonderful and the soda bread is light.

Too bad for me as I am working on St. Patty's day night. We are hosting a dinner at the American Legion on Friday instead. I most certainly will be helping out and then getting my ration of green beer, corned beef and cabbage. There is no parade here in Wickenburg AZ. as most of the people here are of German decent. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend everyone!!! David O.

I always super look forward to that annual day when we are all Irish, and make it a point to have a Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner. However, as I don't know of any one really great pub in New Jersey that specializes in this traditional treat, in recent years I've repeatedly fallen prey to eateries that boasted big and delivered little. In fact, I'm still smarting from the nouvelle portion of corned beef and cabbage I paid $12.95 for last year, which came with a dinner-roll-sized bit of sourdough bread. Gee, yuh think yuh can spare it? Where's your spirit, man? Therefore, this year I'm staying away from the bars that are otherwise not known year-round for their food. Instead, I will be going to my favorite diner in East Newark, New Jersey, which will be having a soup-to-nuts Corned Beef and Cabbage special for around $14. I will be very surprised if it is not great. I plan to feast. Gosh, I hope they have the blueberry cobbler for dessert. Nothing to do with the holiday, but boy is it good. The Bear

Hello All, My parents, bless their souls, didn't and don't have an Irish bone in their bodies, so while they made good cabbage, they relied on Hormel Corned Beef in a can. It wasn't until I married my wife, (whose family is 99% Norwegian, but she was born and raised in New York,) that I tasted and fell in love with real corned beef. Prior to marrying her, St. Patrick's Day was just a bar party, an excuse to get drunk. Now that I don't need an excuse to get drunk, I prefer to appreciate the food and meaning of the holiday or event, and of the culture from which it sprang. If you have time, check St. Patrick's bio. His name was Maewyn and he was captured and made a slave before his conversion. His life and works are very interesting. This year, my daughter is home for spring break and will be watching my son so my wife and I can go out on St. Patrick's Day (we haven't had a night out alone since last August.) The only problem is...my wife wants Italian. Take Care, Fieldthistle

paul, you are absolutely right. in fact, i believe some thousand or so college kids have already started here(savannah). it would be a great idea, one year, for roadfoodies to come and join this celebration. hey, if anyone is coming this year, let me know, youu should drop by my little place. this year, for the parade, i just heard, we have 351 units in the parade. iver 50 different marching bands, one of them is 250 member strong. yea, thats alot of parade! the largest ever. but then, after the parade, the boozing starts, and dont stop until your pickeled carcasses are scraped off the side walk. in some cases it takes several days to get that way. thats why the teenagers have already started. i believe that even the family pet get tipsy, this time of the year.

I've never celebrated this. So what's a girl to do if she don't party, don't like beer and the family is not fond of corned beef?

CajunKing, I like your pics, take some photos if you can. Besides the corned beef and cabbage with red potatoes and carrots, that day we consume irish soda bread, green bagels, lime green jello cake, irish cheddar cheese, irish breakfast tea, McSorley's ale, Bushmills whisky. You don't have to be irish to love St. Patrick's Day. Its a party!

It's a little late for this year, but make plans to come to Jackson, MS, for St Patrick's Day next year. We have the 4th largest parade in the US(behind only New York, Boston & Savannah) My husband and I (as usual) will be riding on the Fenian's Pub float (Fenian's is the only Irish pub in Jackson) We know we're too old for all this carrying on, but it's so much fun we just keep on!
