It's baaaaaaack, Liederkranz

Good news from my brother.  After a 25 year hiatus, Liederkranz is back.

Sounds great. I can't wait to try it. I think a trip to Monroe is in my near future.

I wonder if Baumgartner's is now offering a Liederkranz sandwich alongside its Limburger sandwich.

The Best Yet markets (at least here on Long Island) have the 6 oz package listed for $4.99 in this weeks ad.

From Wikipedia - .....Liederkranz was created in 1891 by Emil Frey (1867–1951), a young Swiss cheesemaker in Monroe, New York, who created Velveeta there in 1923.

Have not even thought about Liederkranz for years - use to love it when it was readily available from local German style delis and, I think, some local supermarkets.

Finding decent Limberger has been frustrating - it's always not nearly properly ripened . I love it with pears in the Fall and Winter.

I'll be looking at our local cheese monger for some Liederkranz. Also, very interesting to learn that it was developed in Monroe, NY, just about 30 miles from  my home.

    Thanks for the info, Kozel...

    Cheers, John

Do stinky cheeses taste like they smell?

I've never been able to get paste the aroma of a stinky cheese.

If I find Liederkranz how would I eat it?

Have a couple Stiff Drinks, Hold your nose, Close your eyes and go for it!
I find they taste better than they smell.
Probably find it in a speciality cheese shop or an ethnic European market.

Ya see...  that just doesn't sound appetizing.

If I have to hold my nose it will just spoil the experience.

Maybe I'll just begin with those 2 drinks.

I've never found either liederkranz or limburger to be "stinky" once sliced or spread, but to answer your question -- no, both cheeses are wonderfully tasty and creamy. I used to spread liederkrantz on Saltines for snacks, and I'd slice it and make sandwiches on rye bread with sliced onions. I still do that with limburger.

Okay, I won't go searching for it, but if I happen to see it and it doesn't cost a small fortune I 'may' give it a try.

It's just that I remember when I was a kid that one of my dad's employees smeared Limburger on the manifold (I think) of my Dad's car.  He was an Ex-employee.

It took over a year until we weren't reminded.

LIEDERKRANZ AND LIMBURGER CHEESES ARE BACK

My mother's favorite cheese was Liederkranz, a creamy, pungent, spreadable, not as strong smelling as Limburger but more flavorful. I last tasted it the early 60's before I joined the Army and left home for good. My first permanent duty station was 3years in Germany, a cheese lover's paradise. There were home made cheeses galore including one generic called a Bauerhandkaese, Farmer's Hand Cheese, which was served smeared with olive oil and crusty bread which maybe came close to Liederkranz. In the years since I have often wondered what happened to Liederkranz. A few weeks ago an acquaintance mentioned it and I googled it and found it was again being produced by Hefti Creek. They are also making Limburger which I did not realize was also not being produced anymore. My order of Liederkranz, Limburger and Jaegerwurst arrived. I located at Saranac Pale Ale, Triscuit crackers and had a wonderful nostalgic lunch. My Liederkranz was not yet creamy but still delicious. According the accompanying info sheet, it needs to age a couple months to reach creaminess. Luckily I ordered more than one block which I am giving to myself as a Christmas treat. Luckily my wife does not like stinky cheese.

Where is Hefti Creel located? There a couple of dairies in Wisconsin that make both limburger( for years) and Liederkranz...I believe Mr. Hoffman ordered the latter last year from Wisconsin....?

Limburger is incredibly flavorful, not at all like it smells. There's nothing to compare it to, it's earthy and a little sweet, but really it's like nothing else.

I used to love Liederkranz.  My mother always had some in the fridge,  right next to the box of Velveeta.

What is funny about all stinky cheeses is it is mostly the rind......cut that away and its usually a lovely cheese.....thanks, Brad, for the link......
