I will include a summary of S E USA gas prices from this weeks road trip with my travel report. But I must comment on the variations of pricing.
While we lived in SoCal, we were always quoted the "fact" that California required the 'Cleaner' gas for reduced pollution and that costs extra to produce. Out in the High Desert area the prices were normally even higher due to " longer shipping distances". Well..Sorry Charlie.. Not true, at least for some companies...
I stopped in Needles CA one afternoon, for a coke (not gas) as the gas prices were in the $1.60 plus range(at the time)... An hour or so later after checking out some rail activitiy in Kingman,AZ we pulled into a Circle K for Gas. The price was $1.31....and the same tanker that I had seen dropping a load in Needles, was filling the AZ Circle K tanks. The driver said the load he had came from a distribution center in Long Beach, CA and his stops included the High Desert of CA as well as AZ (from the same load of fuel). Kingman is further away than Needles from the source...The gas is the same as the 'clean gas' sold in CA...but the pricing is the result of the scams the companies put into action to 'Fleece' the consumer.

Very true......especially since here in Long Beach-----home of the "distribution center"-----we're paying $1.75 and up for regular.

it's not a roadtrip for me unless:

      1) i'm financially strapped but i'm going out anyway. always essential. thus, why i eat at diners, buy kitch amd stay in questionable establishments. but way more fun!

2)i buy one of those gas station brownies that are like 50 cents.

      3) i ruin at least one map.

It is not a roadtrip unless I have a map, know where I am going and have a destination that I have not travled before.

DEFINITELY gotta have the cool coffee shops, as well as the indie local record shops, the two lane country highways, and the music blasting. (by the way, hwy 64 is the coolest in the world, US 64, not I-64, it goes from the coast of NC to Teec Nos Pos, AZ. If you EVER get the chance, drive on it. It's perfect. That's all I have to say.)

I appreciate the suggestion of traveling across country on U.S. Hwy. 64 and am going to spend some time thinking about that. In recent summers, I have traveled U.S. 64 in North Carolina enough to know it takes one to wonderful barbeque destinations. Can you say Lexington, North Carolina (the true bbq capital of America)? Head down toward Statesville, and 64 takes you to the county road turnoff for Keaton's BBQ, where I ate the best chicken of my life last August. A few years ago, I took 64 from Raleigh to Rocky Mount to visit the original Melton's for barbeque on the banks of the Tar River (too late, as the owner had abandoned the river and cooking over wood coals after the huge Hurricane Floyd flood).

Studying the map, I see that in North Carolina, 64 either takes me to places I like to visit or puts me close by (e.g. easy detours to the 2 bbq palaces in Shelby). The highway hits Asheville, Chattanooga, and Memphis. So, just east of the Mississippi, there's a host of tried and true roadfood destinations and interesting possibilities.

A cross-state trip in Tennessee on highway 64 seems doable this Spring and is looking mighty inviting. I remember eating at a good place on the Ocoee River (the Ocoee Inn?) some years ago, and love the world-class ribs at Waycrazy's Bar-B-Que on Chattanooga's Signal Mountain. Maybe I could time the trip to conclude on the weekend of Memphis in May!

Woo hoo!! Go for it...wherever I go in NC, I figure out a way to get back that uses 64, it's so perfect...sigh. I'm "planning" (meaning, I'm putting up a map on my wall planning vaguely for the distant future) a trip for the entire length of it. glad someone else agress with me, at least about this end of it.

This holiday week we will be staying local to share some time with family here...but this past weekend I did a 2 day tombstone foto shoot in central Ohio for my genealogy project. Gas here in the Louisville area is up for the holiday with typical prices in the $1.47-$1.55 range. But I got off I-71 in Carrollton KY, the stations near the interchange were that high...but the Walmart a block down the street was at $1.25 with 3 cents off for the 'Courtesy card" Use.
On the way home the Flying J truck stop was at $1.33 a gallon (I-71 at the Ohio 68 milepost. All in all a reasonable price considering the surrounding areas.
Between 2am Sunday morning and 6pm Monday evening ...Several cups of coffee, a couple of Pepsi's, and a half-gallon of Cran-Peach from Walmart... one can of mixed nuts (less than 50% peanuts) about half a bag of chips, a chicken fried steak dinner (16 oz patti) at the Country Kitchen at the above listed truck stop. Thats about it..
Temp was 70 on sunday with bright Sun...Sunday nite rain changing to light snow, temp monday morning 29 shooting up to 32 by 11am !
It is good to be home now.

I got hip to college towns my last road trip - Oberlin, Ohio has some cool places and a beautiful campus. The town also has a long history of progressive attitudes, being champions of abolition, women's suffrage, and temperance (I give 'em points for the first two)

Linda and I consider our laptop computer loaded with the latest DeLorme Street Atlas interfaced with GPS a necessity for roadtrips nowadays. It makes it possible for us to be more adventurous with out-of-the-way routes. It's so easy to make spur of the moment changes and adds to the enjoyment of the journey. It helps find the Roadfood too.

You leave home with food to snack on in the car and you return home with all kinds of regional favorites that you pick up along the way.
Our car is always packed with all kinds of goodies when we return home.

You get a bladder infection from holding it in so long. A stop at a Big Boy also is usually involved.

Does RainX work? I've never tried it. I was thinking of putting it on my car window which will be towed by the RV later this month.

BTW, won't go on the road anymore without my notes from "Roadfood" forum cached on my laptop!

Just refreshed my windows with it yesterday. I have used it for several years and think it's great. I haven't noticed any problems with my wiper blades. Besides, with the RainX, I don't even need the wipers!

It's not a roadtrip unless you get some good barbecue of the pig variety, particularly in the South.
Stopped during leaf seeking trip in Tennessee at the often mentioned, universally loved, cited as World's Best, Ridgewood BBQ in Bluff City.
Folks, are any of you that rave about this place actually FROM the South? The closest product similar to their pork sandwich would be a fast food promotional item called an Arby-Q. Thin, deli-style slices of pork in painfully sweet bbq sauce (suspect that it's supplied by Kraft), plus lots of store-bought slaw.
Clue that this is pure tourist chow showed up upon leaving - I looked at license plates in parking lot....almost no Tennessee, majority from Florida and midwestern states.
If you happen to be in Tri Cities area, try the Dixie BBQ in Johnson City - MUCH better (also reviewed on roadfood.com). But as for Ridgeway, I DON'T GET IT.

                                    ....the top is down.

....the AAA map is highlighted in pink (roadfood eateries), orange (roadside attractions), and green (water towers with cool names). My roadtrip buddy is a little anal retentive about such things, and a water tower fanatic.

....I have added at least one new stadium to my collection.

....I have seen something that could be described as the "World's Largest...." whatever.

When it's my turn to drive, we have to stop at some little store where my husband will pick up one of those free Auto Trader tabloids and I have to restrain him from calling and going to look at some used car or truck or motorcycle or whatever out on some dirt road. (We are permitted to screech to a stop when he's driving and sees some vehicle in a wooden garage or barn with the door open.)

It's not a roadtrip unless I eat enough bad stuff to put on a few pounds. By "bad" I mean bad for me, like Mt Dew, Doretos, gas station fried chicken, something from any bakery that I happen to pass etc.

Its not a road trip unless I have a list of potential road food joints along the way. I always try to plan ahead.
