... it starts out with a mug of coffee (which might have to be refilled at some stop if the trip is too lengthy).

Clothier - then you will have one child listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, one to C&W, and another Metallica, all on headsets playing so loud it makes you want to jump out the window.

Lone Star- RE the different taste in music...
It doesn't have to be the kids!! My wife likes the blues/jazz sounds. I can take it for an hour or so, but that's enough.
I like to have my scanner on monitoring the railroad radio traffic to see if there is a nearby train to check out.... get the picture?? It's headsets for her, and the scanner is placed on my left to keep it as far from her as can be.Actually both of us tend to not use any sound stuff when we ride together...it is the time for good talks and discussing the meaning of life itself !!

1 Meantime count the coke cups or FF bag/boxes in the front seat--divide by 3 then multiply by a factor of 2 The result is the number of days since you left home. (2 adults and a dog...no kids)

                              2. Rest Area Bathroom break x 4 plus the meal stop x 3 plus Wal-Mart stop (or 2) added together will equal one day on the road.

                              3. Excessive speed stop by county or local cop..warning issued instead of ticket because you asked about good nearby BBQ and Cop's brother runs one. He/she escorts you to the place . One Stop per day ! (Except in Georgis raise it to 2 stops per day)

.... you pick a compass point and drive, not knowing what you will see or where/what you will find to eat. Good idea...heading out NOW.

Ah, the challenge is to make a detour, just giving more opportunities to find a new, exciting place to chow down or catch a snack.

Unfortunately there are no detours because I live on an island and I have to cross a bridge to go anywhere that's not local and I have to pay $4.00 or $5.00 to cross the bridge to get home.

For me, it's ESSENTIAL to load up the 6-CD carousel. Listening to music is half the fun of the trip.

Beyond that, while I like stumbling into finds, I also like to have at least one place I already know I'm going to try: it makes me look even more forward to the trip.

Everybody get's a turn to pick, and everybody has to listen to everybody else's music. Makes for very interesting trips. My dad likes jazz and big bands. My Mom likes folk and classical. My brother liked Cream and Dylan. My sister always used to pick an hour of no music. I liked Beach Boys and country.

Great idea, especially when WE were kids----but----are YOU really ready to listen to WHATEVER your kids want to hear!? We tried it but i have to admit that though i am an old rock and roller hippie and a blues fan---Metallica and MegaDeath brought out the headphones in our car!!

Man, I'm glad my wife and I have the same taste in music...

When I moved cross-country lst year, we had a Ryder truck that only had a radio. Thank god for NPR and half-decent oldies stations, because the radio landscape is pretty damn bleak.

It's not a roadtrip unless my wife's in the passenger seat, looking through the map book and figuring out what towns we're going to be near at mealtimes and postulating what kind of local restaurants will be there.

Oh, and unless we're stopping at local convenience stores to gas up and looking for regional brands of soft drinks and potato chips to try!

I gassed up today (in Manhattan) for an overnight trip to Philly (yes, I'll work in a cheesesteak), and was thrilled to see that the price of regular had gone DOWN to $1.87.9. It was more than $2 during the summer.

So, I guess it's all relative....

It's not a road trip unless we have Route 44 sweet teas from Sonic (downside - lots of pitstops), a couple of bags of regional brand potato chips in various flavors, and the tablet PC, so that I can get on-line, en-route, to check roadfood recommendations for the towns we'll be passing through. This particular habit drives my husband crazy ("drive faster, sweetie, so that we can hit Virginia around lunchtime and stop at Mrs. Rowe's"). I loooove the tablet...
