It's snowing on the Vikings Sun, 12/12/10 3:07 PM (permalink)
The roof of the Metrodome collapsed----good thing the game was postponed.

In the old days the Vikes would play outdoors in this type of weather and most of those guys wouldn't even wear long sleeves.

Hope Davy wasn't thae architect who calculated the snow load on
    the Dome-------They had evacuated everyone.

Will Farve  have to finish the season out in the cold with the reat of the people of Wisconsin ----or
will Congress set aside a special fund to have the Dome repaired before Monday night?   It is a puzzlement.

Last I heard the game has been relocated to Detroit.

I believe that qualifies as adding insult to injury.

The dome collapsed the first year it was open from snow. They had since learned how to control it even though Minneapolis' top 5 record snowfalls have occurred since the dome opened in 1982. This one was no record but it was rather intense. Maybe the Vikings relaxed safeguards. With the dome collapsing it puts new emphasis on their request for a new stadium.

Favre told USA Today that he doubts he will play even with the delay to Monday night.

As for the Dome, I had absolutely nothing to do with it AM. However, if the Mall of America skylight atrium over the amusement park ever fails I am in big trouble. I put my heart and soul and extensive design and research into making that a reality.

Yeah, and to add more insult to the already down and out Vikings...Admission to the Po'folks seats in Detroit will be Free. Apparently they don't think there will be a 'paying crowd' for this game'!!

Davydd, has anything been said about a timetable for repairs?  The Bears are supposed to visit the Vikings on Sunday and I'm wondering if that game will need to be relocated, too.

The video from inside the Metrodome was pretty neat.

The Bears looked good against the Pats.  Had nice uniforms and helmets.
                The LA Vikings-----is that a possibility ?

                  Brad,

In the past the dome had collapsed three other times, but not since 1983, and I don't think the damage was as extensive. It took 4 days to repair in the past but crews will not show up until today to assess the damage. I suspect the Bears game may be a no go in the dome.

This was the 5th biggest snow storm to hit the Twin Cities and all the top 5 have been since 1982 after the dome opened. This one was probably the most intense and coldest storm of all to hit. The blizzard condition high winds drove the dome crew off the roof.

I think this seals the deal. Mother Nature has come down on the side of the Vikings in the new stadium issue. The State Legislature will probably have to act this coming session or it might be buh bye LA Vikings. It is going to be interesting with a 6.2 billion dollar state budget deficit looming, a Republican legislature and a Democratic governor.

Why not add 500 sky boxes and 35,000 seats to the sparkling new Gopher Hole stadium to meet minimum NFL requirements?  I don't understand why the 2 teams cannot share.

The Vikings are insisting on a domed stadium. For instance, game time tonight in Minnesota will be -2 degrees with 17" of snow to still clear off the seats and fields if playing in an open stadium. That is not an issue with the University of Minnesota. They wind up their season around Thanksgiving and would only play on that weekend every other year at home.

The Metrodome is used for a lot more than Viking games where a dome is a must throughout the winter months for events.

I can remember attending Viking games in December at the old Metropolitan outdoor stadium where the Mall of America is now located. My aunt and uncle had season tickets and I was got the tickets for December games because they would not sit outside in the cold. It was fun and not so fun. Fun in that you could survive it and brag about it. Not so fun in that you froze your tush off no matter how warmly you tried to dress. Besides, there is no longer any coach like Bud Grant who would not even allow heaters on the sidelines.

I recall being in Minneapolis about  10+ years ago when the dome partially collapsed.  I was staying at a hotel close to the UM campus and I saw it on the news and drove past it.

You would think that the engineers that designed it was aware that the weather can be very severe around the twin cities?
