I've got a problem... Sun, 08/12/12 6:38 PM (permalink)
Okay, so I am a 16 year old boy (I know, I know, just please read!) . I have ALWAYS wanted to go to an upscale, michelin-starred restaurant in NYC. I live in New Jersey, and am 1 hour away from the city. My mother told me I could pick a restaurant to go to Labor Day weekend for my birthday. I had settled on Daniel Boloud's restaurant. I asked my mom, but then we encountered a problem.

We NEVER drive to the city because of all of the traffic and congestion because it scares my mom. She said driving was out of the question. As all of you (I hope) know, Daniel is a Jacket Required restaurant, so I'm assuming a jacket is required. We can't take suitcases or garment bags, because it would be too much trouble, especially if we might not even stay in a hotel at all. Is there any way I can transport a jacket in a small bag that I can take on a ferry and taxi to take to a hotel?

If there is no solution for that, (I am open to anything right now!!) can anyone suggest a restaurant where I would be  able to wear a nice button-down shirt with a tie and get away with it? Preferably well-known and michelin-starred if possible.

Please help!

Sincerely, Mike

Call first and explain the situation. Reserve a house jacket in your size...and call the same day or day before to remind them. Wear a tie...and Happy Birthday!!

Let us know how after you enjoyed your Birthday meal.

        Almost perfect in spelling...to boot!

Boulud. No points deducted for names.

Solution #1: Minimal driving in New York traffic (there are shorter ways, but this keeps you on highways): Go north to the GW, take the Harlem River Drive to the FDR drive (they're effectively the same road), take the 53rd St. exit. There are a couple of reasonable garages right off the exit (and somewhat more reasonable garages if you go one block to 1st Avenue, turn right, and then turn right again on 54th St.). Getting cabs on 1st Avenue is pretty easy.

Solution #2: Carry the jacket over your arm when out of air conditioning. You will probably have to get the jacket cleaned and pressed, but that's a lot cheaper than a hotel (although with the cost of public transportation in New Jersey these days, it may not be cheaper than driving). You can grab a cab on 1st Avenue pretty easily.

My problem is that I don't understand the problem. Wear the jacket or sling it over your shoulder with your index finger in the loop till you have to put it on.

Can you take the bus or the train into the city if your mom doesn't want to drive into New York? My sister lives in Piermont,NY, and they take the bus into the city all the time. When I came from Texas for vacation several times , that's how we did it, except when they took me to the Bronx Zoo and then we drove.
Do you have a nice suit? Well if you do, wear the jacket .Saw plenty of business guys with them on and they go to work in them every day.  I hope you have a good birthday and please tell us how dinner went. There are great places to eat in NYC,and some bad ones too.

                    What Mr. Hoffman said.

OP posted a similar thread at Chowhound, where he mentioned that a museum visit might also be in the works. I think that's the problem. He hasn't replied to either thread. ???
Best of luck to you, OP! I'd love to eat at Daniel.
