JFK Ground: Has anyone heard this ???

When I saw the topic, I thought you mean't JFG ground coffee out of Knoxville, TN. When I clicked on the link, I saw it was a typo and you actually mean't JFK.

Topic title needs to be amended to "JFK Ground" to make sense.

This was really fascinating. Unfortunately, I don't think this type of situation is restricted to JFK. It probably happens at the dozen or so mega airports around the world.

At one time I considered a career as an air traffic controller. Transport Canada was hiring/training big time. Now, I think "What were you thinking?!!!!!! You could not pay me ENOUGH to be an ATC.

There are a number of airports pilots hate flying into, JFK and Reagan National to name two. Most airports in use today were designed for prop airplanes or early jetcraft, i.e. short runways, etc. Traffic patterns have been restricted due to noise abatement and populated areas. Also, there are restrictions due to 9-11 which do not permit flying in certain areas, which then make the traffic patterns more congested - everybody trying to get into the same places with narrowing lanes of travel. Even with all the computers, etc. ATC's earn their keep.

The new A380 from Airbus is making its first flight to the USA today. It will land at JFK today and go on to Chicago tomorrow before returning to Germany. It is scheduled to make it's first flight to Dulles on the 25th.

This aircraft is about twice the size of a 747 . It isn't hard to imagine the increased passenger load on the airport services as it comes into service. Louisville is expanding some of it's runways to handle the A380...not for passenger carrying airlines, but for the huge U P S hub located here. UPS is said to be ordering 10 of the aircraft for its service to international locations.

the next time I'm in a plane waiting for what seems eternity to take off, I'll keep that guy's difficult job in mind.

I read that Lufthansa did a demo in which they loaded 500 passengers into the thing in 20 minutes.

I'm guessing that should equal about two hours for Americans.

I thought there were supposed to be 2 simualtaneous landings.

The Quantas flight from Sydney to L A is set for today also..a few minutes after the JFK Landing., I believe. It is a test flight only (no revenue passengers aboard). I didn't catch the noon news, did all go well at both airports?

(7:00PM)I watched the film of the Landing at LAX... Not one I would have felt good about. It really bumped and twisted a bit on touching down.
