JOE's Real BBQ Gilbert, Arizona Thu, 02/8/07 6:43 PM (permalink)
Haven't been by Joe's for quite some time now, but business today lead me through the heart of downtown Gilbert and, since it was lunchtime, thought I'd pop in for a little Q.

Joe's is one of those destination places for a lot of folks, has a reputation for good Pecan-smoked BBQ with a clean and friendly atmosphere. The building itself has been there since 1929. They have done a great job in the dining room with lots of nick-nacks including an old John Deere tractor, which is kind of a neat novelty.

It's the kind of place where you get in line, then order your food at a counter, being sure to grab your tray, untensils and beverage of choice before hand.

Some great meat choices are to be had, including Brisket, Pulled Pork, Hot links, Pork ribs, and bone-in chicken, among other things.

The plates are served up by weight, one can decide on 3/4 lb mixed sampler, 1/2 lb meat plate, or sandwiches of either 1/3 lb or 1/4 lb.

Side items are included on your order, with slaw, potato salad, corn on the cob, cheesy potatoes, BBQ Pit beans, or mac and cheese.

Other noteworthy items are their gigantic baked potatoes, which you can order stuffed with your choice of meat; and for dessert, among several choices is the Root Beer Cake...wish I would of had room to try that! [|)]

Since it was 78 degrees and sunny, I decided to sit out on a picnic table under the shade trees in the big back yard to eat. As you can see, I decided on the 1/2 lb plate with Brisket and Pork Ribs, with my sides being the cheesy potatoes and BBQ Pit beans. I also got my hands on an ice cold Stewart's Cherry and cream soda-pop to wash it down with.

The ribs were finger licking good, and pulled away from the bone with just the slightest tug. The brisket had a nice smoke ring on it and was moist and flavorful. It did not need the sauce...I have to remember next time to order without.

Additional sauces are available on the side with the hot one fired up with Habenaros. Also available at the condiment station are pickles, sweet peppers, diced red onions and jalapenos.

Overall, I really like Joe's. It is quick, consistant and very good Q. Is it the best in town? Probably not. But it is right up on the list to be sure, winning several awards over the years.

As a resident of Chandler, AZ, just down the road, I can completely vouch for Joe's. Their root beer cake is really something special. A word of advice, don't sit in the booths next to the inevitable line of people on the south side of the building because they'll eyeball your food and ask you a bunch of questions while you're trying to fill your face full of delicious bbq. I nearly had to fight off a vicious snowbird with my fork.

ALSO: Just tried Joe's other property tonight, Joe's Farm Grill, and was came away very impressed. Rather than try and describe it, here's a link:

It's really a charming oasis in a sea of suburbia. The huge trees they desribe on property have warning signs for "danger of falling and scorpions." I think the reference to scorpions may just be a scare tactic, but... you know... not going to test that theory any time soon.

That looks like my kind of place, do they provide somewhere to take a nap after eating.

Great report, Desert Dog. It's great to know more about roadfood places in the Phoenix area.
