What a terrific article! It sure makes me appreciate my childhood, since I was just subjected to lots of Dukes of Hazzard reruns. Congratulations to Jane! Thanks for posting the link jmckee.

Great Write-up ! It brings back memories of my Czech Grandparents discussing, then deciding, to include me in a visit to the Shrine Auditorium in L A to see "The Bartered Bride", in Czech of course. It was my first exposure (that I can recall) to the culture and the language of my heritage. That was about age 8 for me. In followup activities, both my Grandparents and my Mother replayed recordings of the program by various Companies over the next few years.

Al, if you liked your Czech heritage in Smetana's "The Bartered Bride," just click on the link below for a similar experience you'll LOVE: Frederica Von Stade (one of my favorites) singing Dvorak's "Moon Song" from his opera Rusalka. Not just "good Czech opera"; simply one of the prettiest songs in the entire opera repertory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPikNbAO994&feature=fvst

Thank you for the link. It was nice to hear! We had a nice visit to Spilville, Iowa some years back, where Dvorak wrote his American work. While there we stopped at the Clock Museum, an exhibit of hand carved wooden clocks that are beautiful examples of the long isolated winters in that part of Iowa!! During our visit the caretaker of the place took my Mom and Janet to the house next door to the museum where she gave us a plate of fresh from the oven Kolache ! Yeah we have good memories of Dvorak, AND Iowa !

For those who may have seen the "J D Wentworth" Cash advances on legal settlements commercial that fills our screens thru-out daytime tv...anyway, that comes to mind when I think of Jane and Michael and all the crew on the bus, bellowing some Viking Saga (en Espanol, por Favor!) Yep, "The Barber of Taos" echoing off the mountains as the various 'Burps and Belches' accompany the solo artists !
