Jane Stern Hi Roadfooders, an hour ago we got the news that Gourmet Magazine has ceased publication. It is very very important that the media is aware that we have many supporters. Would it be too obnoxious to ask some of you to go to this link and write something favorable about us? XXX http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/05/gourmet-68-to-die/?apage=2#comments "Done Madame. Done." -- John Adams to Abigail, "1776".

I also threw in my support. I really wasn't prepared for this news, and I'm sad to think that I won't be seeing your features anymore. I really feel like it's another blow to my culinary culture.

I wish that Michael and you would write a monthly column in Parade magazine. I once had a cooking class with the late Sheila Lukins. Someone in the class asked her why she sold the Silver Palate and began writing for Parade magazine. She said it was because Parade paid so well. Ya’ll would reach an enormous number of readers in Parade, far more than you ever had with Gourmet. Yuk to the New York Times.

Wow. I have been reading your column there for over 25 years, and have very much enjoyed it. I posted there, and shared the article on my Facebook page.

I posted a comment and am awaiting moderation Here is my comment "I have been reading Gourmet since my mother first got me a subscription in 1989. It has always been a highlight of my month when it arrived. I would spend hours devouring the wonderful pictures and writings. My culinary horizon expanded after Gourmet came into my life. I LOVE READING IT! The articles let me taste things I had never had a chance to taste or even dream of, it is truly sad news that Gourmet will cease publication. There were certain articles I always turned to first and enjoyed reading and rereading. The Stern's articles were one of my monthly treasures. I love going back and paging through the back issues, many dog eared or stained from attempting to make something listed. Each issue has a special memory. Losing Gourmet is like losing a long time friend. I will remember it fondly. The WONDERFUL pictures, beautifully written articles, the sensuous smelling perfume advertisements. Coming from a small rural community Gourmet was my escape to life away from small town USA. I could read the articles and experience things I never would have been able to do otherwise. The Stern's opened my eyes to enjoying to the things I normally would not have thought about, but have now spent 20 years exploring. A Meat and 3 in the south, A seafood shack on the east coast and many other places. I will truly miss Gourmet Magazine"

Battered, Smattered and Deep Fried... " Your comment is awaiting moderation. Yet another tradition dies by the recessional sword. My fear is that a magazine of quality will be replaced by some other rag with a title and content such as “Fast Food for Fools” or “The Uber-Wellness Way”. My first attempts at cooking were from a 1960’s issue and has continued to be a reference bible for so many techniques. I especially enjoyed the columns by the “Dynamic Duo” of Jane and Michael Stern. They are storytellers of the real “American Dream”, weaving tales of old diners, delicious oddities and deli denizens for both epicures and the “Everyman”. Tragic times, indeed. "

Glad to comment. What a sad day. I posted a comment and just in case it's not approved, I have printed it here: I found Gourmet magazine when I started to contemplate opening my own restaurant. Amongst all the articles on haute cuisine, I discovered the articles by Jane & Michael Stern. The Sterns concentrated on my kind of cooking and their inclusion in Gourmet demonstrated to me that fabulous food can be found in the humblest of dining establishments. I envy all the establishments that have been reviewed by the Sterns and who proudly display their dog-eared copy of the issue of Gourmet in which they were reviewed. The demise of Gourmet means that thousands of us small independent restaurants will be denied the hope of being reviewed by such a fantastic pair. Although I know I could never compete with the wonderful chefs who were featured in the rest of the magazine, the articles about them and their wondrous creations inspired me to dream of one day entering one of these fine establishments and actually tasting their dishes. Alas, I will have to find my food fix elsewhere. Gourmet, you will be sorely missed.

I love Gourmet Magazine! I was a subscriber for a short time but loved the pictures and the superb writing. Jane and Michael's articles were always the first column I would read! I lived vicariously through the photos and recipes, all of the countries I wanted to visit. The recipes weren't too hard if you were an avid home cook or restaurant chef. I planned many a date on recipes published in Gourmet! Anyway, I did leave my comment on the NYT website and put in a good word for Jane and Michael! Hope it helps. David O.

Done with pleasure! "This is very sad day indeed for the intelligent Gourmet subscribers- The two main reasons I have been a long time Gourmet subscriber are Ruth Reichl’s wonderful humorous and thoughtful columns that took me places I could only afford in my dreams.. And Jane and Micheal Sterns fabulous articles that took me places I actually could afford to go and better yet my children enjoyed discovering with me! Gourmet will truly be missed, and the other publications outh there will not replace this stunning Grande Dame.. Oh Conde Nast, relent!"

ChiTownDiner You got my support and my entry. Does this mean bus trips every month? Comment has been posted and accepted - hope it helps. Also, I would be in favor of the monthly bus trips as well; there's still plenty of places to hit in Buffalo! (or other places for that matter)
