Jay's Potato Chips ... and my Indiana adventure! Mon, 02/28/05 2:34 AM (permalink)
One of my favorite brands of potato chips is Chicago-based Jay's. For those not in the know they are on the Web at http://www.jaysfoods.com.

On a trip to Indiana a week or two ago I decided to try to find them. My first stop was a Jay-C's grocery west of Columbus on State Road 46 near I-65. I was drawn since the name Jay was written on the sign similarly to that on the chip bags. No such luck; Jay-C is a different grocer, based out of Seymour and part of the Kroger empire.

Then in Martinsville, southwest of Indianapolis along State Road 37, I decided to check out Village Pantry, a C-store chain (owned by Marsh of Indianapolis) that in the late 1990s changed from offering 76 gasoline to offering Marathon. In there I was in potato chip heaven--I finally found a way to get Jay's without having to travel to Chicago!!!

On the Jay's site I noticed that their distribution centers are in Evansville, Lafayette, and Mishawaka (South Bend area) as far as Indiana goes. Lafayette is the closest of the three to Martinsville about 100 miles away via I-65 and IN 37. Has anyone here been able to pick up Jay's in their local Village Pantry--or even Marsh?

      ** UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! **

While I drove down to Franklin (north of Middletown) to check out a new pizzeria (Pisanello's at 355 S. Main St./NB OH 123), I decided to do my grocery shopping at Marsh's. While cruising the store, at the end of one of the aisles, lo and behold! A kiosk full of Jay's potato chips! I almost gave up because they were alone, separate from all of the other brands like Lay's and Mike Sells on a shelf I saw beforehand.

Regardless, the Jay's brand sells in Ohio!

      P. S. This Marsh's is on OH 73, just west of I-75 Exit 38 (the Springboro/Franklin exit) on the south side of the road at 1084 E. Second St in the strip mall.

When I was a boy, we couldn't buy Jay's in my home town of Galesburg IL, 167 miles WSW of Chicago, but we'd bring them home from Chicago. Since Jay's is a local manufacturer, the chips were always fresh, which is what I remember as their special charm--always perfectly fresh. They still make a hull-less popcorn that I buy in Chicago and bring home to San Francisco.

In Galesburg you could surely get Sterzing's. I like Jay's, but if there was a bag of Sterzing's they would always be my first choice. (love that grease)
