I'll take Red Lobster - the ambiance is much nicer, and the food is of a higher quality, IMHO.  Joe's is always kind of a loud annoying place that is usually full of kids.

When they opened the first Joe's in the Columbus area back about 12 or 13 years ago my wife and I went to try it. The thing I remember about it was the noise. It was so loud that I got a headache and didn't order anything. My wife said her food was lousy. Frankly, I have no idea how you can make stone crab (that's what she had) taste lousy, but apparently they managed.

I don't like either one.  The Joes Crab Shack closed down here a couple of years ago.  Good riddance.  Growing up in Florida, I love fresh seafood.  But it has to be fresh.  I haven't been able to get that at RL or Joes.

Budgetgourmet I just assumed you were some poor soul from the Midwest forced to choose between these two and didn't even notice you were from Houston.  Gaido's and Benno's and Shrimp and Stuff are open but many places in Galveston are still closed after The Storm Everybody Has Forgotten but you don't need to go to Galveston to get good seafood around here, much better than either of those two.  I'd go to Capt. D's or Baytown Seafood before I'd waste money on either of those.

Joe's is annoying and loud, only have gone a few times due to someone's birthday request. We do go to Red Lobster every few months but only for lunch which we usually have seafood salad or something light. It's convienient and the best option close to where we shop.

I tried Joe's when I lived in No. Virginia. I wasn't too impressed. Reminded me of bar food. I acutally like Red Lobster. Living in Maryland, I can only eat so many crab cakes. At least at Red Lobster they know how to cook shrimp and scallops properly (I find most places either under cook or over cook their scallops). I usually get the haddock since this is the only restaurant around that serves it. Now if they'd only have full bellied fried clams I'd be very, very happy.

My first choice would be to skip them both and find someplace local and good.

However, if I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Joe's.  On the two or three occasions we've been there, we were on vacation and eating lunch in the middle of the afternoon, so the place was practically empty.  No crowds, no noise.  As for the food, such as it is, I think it's better than Red Lobster's.

Re:Joe's Crab Shack vs. Red Lobster 2009/01/07 11:04:38 (permalink)
Let's be honest ... the problem with Joe's is that it's schizophrenic.   It's suffering from a split personality.  Whether you enjoy yourself is mainly based on what time of day you go ... and, I suppose, what you're looking for when you go out for a meal.

When our daughter moved to Orlando,  we decided to try Joe's for lunch one day while she was at work.  It was quiet, the food was DELICIOUS ... it was a real treat.    From the staff to the food to the atmosphere ... I would've given it a ten ... that's just how GREAT the experience was for us.

WELL ... we went BACK to Orlando about six months later.   We wanted to take our daughter to Joe's for dinner one night since she'd never tried it.   OMIGOD ... Joe's at night is a completely different restaurant than Joe's during the day.

Basically, Joe's at night would be comparable to a family-oriented Hard Rock Cafe.   The music was loud ... the waiters get up and do these little dance routines ... they had a hoola-hoop competition for the kids ... it was insane.   The worst part was the sound system.  There was this microphone ... and one of the employees was basically your emcee for the night.   Wow ... it must've been set to 11 ... because everytime she got on to talk it was earsplitting.

I think the food was still good ... but honestly, I couldn't tell you one way or the other because we were miserable.    And our daughter was looking at us like we were nuts.   I mean, where was this quiet, quirky restaurant we'd sold her on?

So, I guess if you like loud, frenetic environments ... then this is the place for you.   I didn't mind it when we went to Hard Rock in Las Vegas ... because, quite frankly, we were in LAS VEGAS!   Hard Rock had a very "bar" feeling to it ... so I expected it and enjoyed it.   Joe's Crabshack?  Not so much.

I must agree w/ Grill. Joe's during the off hours. And, I am like a Bloodhound. I can always sniff out something good on the menu... almost anywhere.

The same holds true for RL. I like the bar area. The service is always great and the bread is also. I like the salaid and the coco shrimp apatizer. I know, my spelling is bad!

This is not to say that I do not like a great seafood place much better. It's just that sometimes you must go w/ tha flo and make the best of it.

Joe's is more aimed for kids.  The food is mediocre at best.  Red Lobster is a pretty good restaurant considering it's a chain.

I ate at Red Lobster once ... in 1980-something ... I knew enough then, that this wasn't going to be my place -- despite my venerability to ads and new things at my tender age.

By the time Joe's came around, I knew what sucked.

Best thing at Red Lobster is the cheese biscuits. Not the seafood
    I don't care for Joe's either. Our Joe's was formerly a Landry's which I thought was better than Joe's

The one near me was also a Landry's before Joe's CS. I like Landry's better. Red lobster is not great but it's much better than Joe's CS. Joe's is way overpriced for what you get. I ordered a whole snapper and it was maybe 9 inches long including the tail... barely more than a snack.... with a small portion of rice for $16.00. It had been several years since my first visit there and I was quickly reminded why. I had a half price coupon and still felt cheated.

I've never been to Joes.  My ex hub had been while we were married and refused to return, lol.  Since he was in the Coast Guard we usually lived on the coast and had tons of non-chain seafood restaurants to visit, but I still enjoy Red Lobster for my mom's birthday every year.  I really like their ceasar salad.

I prefer Joe's as well. I cannot stand Red Lobster because they drench everything in so much butter. Red Lobster is one of the few places where I won't eat anything on the menu.

Brat, thanks for the RL ceasar salad tip! My tip is the coconut  shrimp.

Joe's once had blue crab that was good I thought... but no longer on the menu. Anyone have some Joe's tips??? My theory is that you can find something good almost anywhere.

My partner is a seafood eating vegetarian and really likes their shrimp and lobster salad. They have some pretty good sized hunks of lobster in it. I usually get grilled shrimp but, considering you get a salad and side dish, it's a pretty good value for lunch. It's right by where we go to grocery shop so it's a better lunch option for us than the other chains in the area. This one is well managed and has waitstaff that have been there for years. Always a friendly greeting at the door which they hold open for you.

Actually, the question should not be, "Which is the best", because only two things are being compared.
If two things are being compared, the correct way of expressing the question would be, "Which one is better?".
If you are comparing three or more things, then you could correctly ask, "Which is the best?"

I first went to Joe's about seven or eight years ago, I live in Northern Va, and saw a huge sign that said "Joe's Crab House" while driving down the Fairfax County Parkway near Fairlakes.

I told some friends that I saw a new Crab House, and that we should give it a try, ya know have some beers and feast on some spicy Blue Crabs........boy was I disappointed. I never expected it to be what it was......haven't been back since. I thought the food was mediocre at best, and the atmosphere...well it just wasn't my kinda place.

The two or three times I've been to a Red Lobster, the best thing I've had have been the Cheese Biscuits, so for that reason I would say I prefer Red Lobster to Joe's, but I would never recommend either place to anyone.

They both suck, but if forced to choose, I'd probably go with Joe's Crab Shack.  Only because the only thing I get there is their coconut shrimp.  The sauce that comes with it is like a fairly tasty orange marmalade-type stuff, whereas the coconut shrimp at Red Lobster comes with this weird, cream-based pineapple nastiness.
