Johnny & Hanges AC Store Opened Mon, 03/28/05 7:08 PM (permalink)
today. Lunch business was brisk. Had two all the way. Very tasty. I grew up in Rutherford and "going out to dinner" at my house usually meant a drive across the Passaic River to Rutt's Hutt. Rutt's has always been the sine qua non of hotdog perfection in my estimation. The Johnny Hanges dog took me home to Rutt's even though it was topped with Texas weiner sauce rather than Rutt's to die for relish. The Texas sauce was quite good. Not as spicy as I was expecting but I did enjoy it. In fact I was still tasting it back in my office three hours later. Does anyone remember Fat Mike's on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights? That's where I earned my stripes on Texas Weiners.

What exactly is on one "all the way"? Where is J&H located. I'll definitely be giving them a try on my next visit to AC, but strictly as an appetizer for a White House regular.

"All the Way" is north jersey language for a dog with mustard, onions, and chili sauce. This is also known as a Hot Texas Weiner. Deep fried with a thin chili sauce. The Central Jersey, or Plainfield area Texas Weiner is a grilled, rather than deep fried dog topped with a thicker chili. The "Hot Texas Weiner" is also called the "Paterson area Texas Weiner" to distinguish it from the "Plainfield area Texas Weiner".

Plainfield area usually uses a Grote & Weigel griddle frank, while Paterson area uses the Thumann's frank for deep frying. The Hot Grill uses a beef/pork frank from Sabrett.

Johnny and Hanges is an authentic north Jersey Hot Texas Weiner. Originally opened in Paterson, they moved a few years back to Fair Lawn, and just this week opened a new restaurant in Atlantic City. Acclaims, this dog reminded you of Rutt's because it is the same dog, although prepared more like an in and outer rather than a ripper. They also serve a spicier all beef dog from Thumann's that is quite good deep fried and topped with the chili sauce.

Thanks for the info guys,I will make it a point to stop in on my next trip to AC.Lately I notice the food options there are becoming more and more trend-driven as benefits the current "hipness" of the town. Its good that there will be a place for the hot dog aficionado.I still prefer the White House, and the "smoker" wings at Pic's Pub,and the incredibly cheap plates at the Irish Pub,pizza at Tony's Baltimore Grill,to the trendy new places and the ridiculously overpriced casino fare.I sure wish the "12 South" bar round the corner from the Sands was still there,I believe the steak I had there was the best beef value of my life.

          Hey John Fox -

Do you post on the Munchmobile Forum under the non de plume "Hotdog Lover?" There can't be two people in this State that know as much about hotdogs as you do. Can there?

John, which is better in your opinion, Galloping Hill or Libby's Lunch? Wow, I need to get back to NJ, one of the few things I have missed in my short time out here in NM about NJ is the hot dog selections!!

For signman: The new Johnny & Hanges store in Atlantic City is located on Atlantic Avenue near the Tropicana. If you were going there from the White House Sub Shop you would make a right on Atlantic and proceed three or four blocks. It would be on the left side of the street across from a large Catholic Church and diagonally across from the Police Station. If you know where Tony's Baltimore Grill is, J&H's is about two blocks north of there.

For good Mexican, don't forget Los Amigos. There is also sister restaurant in Berlin.

The GHI and Libby's are slightlydifferent in style. Libby's serves a deep fried Thumann's dog and tops it with mustard, chili, and onions; a classic Texas Weiner. Galloping Hill serves a special dog made by Grote & Weigel and grills it. Both are great, but I prefer Galloping Hill by a little.

I agree with you entirely. Whenever someone talks up Rutts Hut, Libby's, Hot Dog Johnnys, Toby's Cup, etc, I always point them back to Galloping Hill. The best of the best.

Its closed. I drove by today to see if it was still open. No surprise there. A sub chain has taken its place and I give them about 4 months tops. I could have told the family to save their money and never open one in AC. They claimed they were a block away from the Tropicana. Try 4 blocks in not a great area way off the boardwalk. The same thing happened to Pats steaks. The only things that work in AC are salt water taffy , the White House Sub Shop, the Irish Pub and buffets. However Rutts Hut would be a welcome sight on the boardwalk. And the Planet Hollywood has been closed in Ceasars as well. No surprise there either. Maybe I should start a AC food thread anyone interested?

I'd be interested.Over the past 15 years or so,everytime I find a place I like, they close down.I got so I went out to the mainland to eat most of the time.

                                Go for it .

I visit AC every other month and am always looking for a nice place to eat.

White house Subs , Irish Pub , and the buffets are the mainstays for me .

I thought Hange and Jonnies was the best. Had a all the way there last month. The best. Even better than my all time favorite, THE HOT GRILL!
