Journey to the USA ? Thu, 08/20/09 4:58 PM (permalink)
Greetings, Roadfooders!

As I wrote in my welcome thread, I am suffering from Flugangst (Aviaphobia). But it is my deepest wish, to visit the homeland of my american father Bob, Bob is (was...?) a resident of "Sun Lakes", Phoenix/Arizona. I am not aware, whether Bob is still alive, we lost E-Mail Contact in September 2004.

Whatever..., I want to travel the USA, and think about a passage with a freighter from Europe over to the USA, and to travel some of the states either with a motorcycle, or with a small camper...

What I need, are links to freighter-passages from Europe to the USA, and back, my planned trip will be 4-8 weeks, 12 weeks would be quite possibly...

Thanks for any advice about my planned journey, I think about the springtime in the year 2010.

Kind regards from Germany

Michael

After checking some freighter travel sites listed by Google, it seems likely that your one-way trip to the U.S. could take as long as 2 weeks, so I think you should plan your whole trip to be 8 to 12 weeks in order to give you enough time in the U.S. Here a couple of URLs:

      Greetings, 6star!

I am aware about a 14 days cruise to the states, no problem so far for me, but to book a freighter passage over to the USA is very costly here in Germany...

I am looking for a chance for a cheap passage, I am not interested in any comfort onboard at all, just a place to sleep, and food...

I have saved 5000,- Euro for the whole Journey, this is all, I would be able to afford.

Thank you very much, so far...

      Kind regards

      Michael

Michael, those days where it was cheaper to book a New York to Berlin flight in Berlin than in New York are over with. I looked at some USA sites offering freighter travel, and I don't think freighter travel is such a good way to save as it was 20 years ago. One remaining way to save money is to find a cheap Europe-to-USA voyage, even if it is on Cunard Lines, and plan to take a train from Germany to another port somewhere in Europe.
