KC BBQ Care Package Mon, 08/29/05 8:18 PM (permalink)
I am visiting my Uncle in D.C. in mid October and need to bring a BBQ Care Package with me from K.C. I am looking for suggestions for meats and sides from any BBQ restaurants in the K.C. area. I know what I like, but need some second opinions.

How are you traveling? I ask to get some idea of travel/storage time needed. Or perhaps you are shipping it direct (Fed-Ex?)?

Most of the good BBQ places in KC ship, or prep for shipment, so you should be able to get stuff ready to transport.

If you are driving I'd consider buying meat without sauce when I got to Richmond or somewhere closer to the eastern end of your trip, Get a gallon of sauce at one of the good BBQ places (Arthur Bryants or others) and doctor up the meat when you arrive!

Although not necessarily the "best", any of the Gates locations has meat deep frozen and cryovac sealed ready for transport whenever you want it.

Perhaps, if you're going to all the trouble of creating a variety pack, you could pick up different specialties from different places. For instance, while their meat is good but fairly ordinary, Zarda's makes some great baked beans; same with Gates. Best Brisket? Best Pork? Ribs? Come on people, the man (I assume) has asked for input here.

While he knows that I am coming the care package is going to be a surprise. I am going to take it with me on the plane. I plan to pack it myself in order to save the money. You would not believe the cost if I buy it pre packaged.

Watch those Air Port Security People......I barely made it back with any of the food I tried to bring home from my last trip to Arkansas. Everyone had to taste the goods to make sure they were real. Donut's, BBQ, Country Ham, etc.etc. My suggestion, Freeze it rock solid. They won't wait around for it thaw. They will zip you right through. LOL
