Ah television.  Always going for the easy choice that requires no research or thought.  Pick two icons, regardless of whether or not they still hold up to their reputation, and pit them against each other.  Don't pay any attention to the more obscure places that may have surpassed the icons in quality and reputation because that might require some research.

Here in Chicago, they would probably pick Pizzeria Uno versus Gino's East, or maybe Lou Malnati.  What about all those neighborhood places that are turning out exceptional food for a smaller audience?

I guess that's the key--audience.  Quality matters not.  All they care about is how many people will be watching regardless of whether the information is accurate or appropriate.

Damn I'm in a cynical mood today...

Just because you're cynical doesn't mean you are incorrect.

The program really was a bust. Using the two most famous locations insured a non-KC audience, with the 1-2 position not really an issue, as both owners stated early on.
I like both places so I will not bad-mouth them, or many other great BBQ locations in and around the KC area.  My gripe is that they repeated the same info literally hundreds of times (it seemed) during the 30 minute production. The whole thing, including the tasting and "voting" could have been done in a 5-7 minute segment on a 30 minute show that included at least 10 more good Que Joints in KC.

I have the show recorded and haven't seen it yet, but heard that Gates didn't fair very well at all.

As for what they had to say: Local report is that they filmed it on a shoestring budget. Even using local college students to do much of the work.

The vote was 4-1 for Bryants. They spent a large percentage of the time rehashing the previous scene, then gave a long build-up to whatever would happen 'after the break'...then back to the rehash...
They did not even ask the KC BBQ Lady about her vote...they were too busy rehashing the first four votes.
If that was a college production, I'd give it a C- at best.

To be fair they should have had outsiders vote. Paul Kirk and the lady from the BBQ Society, as well as most folks in KC have known which one they prefer for many years. I prefer AB also. I don't care for cumin in BBQ sauce which is Gates secret ingredient, not really a secret though.

KC BBQ continues to get national coverage. Danny Edward Boulevard BBQ in Kansas City, Missouri will be on the 2nd episode of the Food Network's new Meat & Potatoes on October 1.

Not BBQ, but the Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill in Kansas City will be on the premier episode this Friday.

They did the same thing with Geno's and Pat's cheesesteaks. Bunch of BS.
