KENTUCKY DERBY this Saturday

No mo UNCLE MO---he has been scratched.
I'm dialed into DIALED UP, but I never play favorites---

so---I'll put a fin on SHAKLEFORD because his name is close to
a great hero of mine SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON an IRISHMAN
who survived 2 winters ice-bound in the Antarctic.  Lost his ship
"The Endurance" -- but no men.  Tremendous story.

Can't resist Mucho Macho Man, what with the Minnesota-based sponsorship, and all.

Indeed, beyond belief almost, I read the book on his fateful expedition, twice!

NO Picks yet for me.  I love the way the local NBC TV station covers the prep activities of the Derby Festival and especially today and tomorrow at the Downs. They broadcast live from 5 am to 7 am then give the Today Show 2 hours, then go back to the local crew for the whole day today (til the last race is over). They will do the same thing tomorrow for the Derby,  With the internet betting now legal, we could have a 'Day at the Track" with wagering if we wanted it without leaving home !!  I love the background coverage as they get ready for each race. Today is the race called the 'Lillies for the Fillies', The Kentucky Oakes...Then of course the 'Run for the Roses' , The Derby, tomorrow.

The Garlands for these two races are made at a Kroger Store in Louisville. Literally thousands of spectaors drop in during these two days of 'flower-prep' to watch the florists putting together the flowers used to drape the winners.  Stories and images of these little contributions make the festivities all the more 'fun'.  A little while ago they interviewed a Lady who has worked on every Garland made for the Kentucky Oakes Winner. Those flowers were first done in 1991, so she has been doing it since it started.  Just a neat side-bar to a fun event.

Ann and Bob will arrive shortly, they have been on the road from St Louis all afternoon. We will grill some nice Porterhouses and a salad, and swap wonderful Roadfood stories all night. Tomorrow we will enjoy a Hubers dinner in the early afternoon and come home in time to watch the Derby and 'visit' some more.
Luckily the sun is out now, but it looks like the showers on and off, may dampen Derby-Day.

Jan and I wish all of you a Happy Derby Day and perhaps if the mood is right we will raise a Mint Julep to all of you sometime during the day tomorrow.

I'm live-streaming WAVE Channel 3 now, with its coverage of the Oaks, but I gather the actual race itself is blacked out because it's exclusively on some stupid cable channel that I don't have access to.

    Grumble.

No, it's blocked, unfortunately. They just posted a message that "due to internet usage agreement," they can't show the race live, but will rejoin WAVE after the race is over.

Cable is great, but it sure can screw up special events.

I have gone to the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park (where else).
It is a lovely spot to visit during every other day of their calendar---maybe 10,000 on a good day----but 100,000 on Belmont Day.
I stopped going last one was 2001--Point Given.

    Hello all ,
Ancient Mariner , been to Belmont also , my buddy lives within walkin distance , crazy amount of folks especially if going for Triple Crown .
Got our money on Mucho Macho cause my wife likes the name and I really like Twice The Appeal at 20 - 1 especially with Borel now onboard .
Threw a few schekles on them and a few other long shots , today is the day to hit those bad boys .
Good luck on the race to you and Mayor Al and everyone else

Well Lads--in a few hours I shall plant myself in front of the TV for an afternoon of sheer enjoyment.  Love the Derby.  Love the pretty ladies with their pretty hats---I have to decide which to have ---a bourbon Manhattan (sounds kinda Kentucky like with the bourbon) or a viodka Martini---hated the only Mint julip I had.

Chewy----ENDURANCE was some great book about a fantastic adventure.  Try the "Mutiny on the Bounty Trilogy---also a fantastic sea voyage---3 books ( that's what trilogy means) ----excellent stuff.

Then "Master and Commander"  21 books ------terrific---better
than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Mayor, turn in your Handicapper's Credentials & Badge.
At least I got 4th after leading all the way.
Pants on Fire burned out in the stretch.  Lady jock was no help.
Dialed In was dialed out from the get go.

165,000---the economy of Kentucky is saved.
