Gates and Son's BBQ in Kansas City is the absolute BEST! I live in Pennsylvania but when I get the change to go Kansas City to visit family, I usually bring back at least 60 bottles of the sauce - and I'm not exaggerating. You will find NO barbeque that is better than Gates & Sons.

Gates certainly has its fans, but many prefer LC's or Fiorella's Jack Stack. Oklahoma Joe's also has a strong following.

Fiorella's Jack Stack for me. The best beans I have ever had. But I also enjoy Arthur Bryants, and just about any of them except K. C. Masterpiece.

The "What" is definitely the decider in KC-Q. There are so many fantastic joints, whenever I would go out fo it, the clencher would be what kind of meat I was in the mood for, that is the beauty of the KC fare, it is endless!! You are not stuck with the traditional choices of ribs or pulled pork. Gates has a superb lambchop, and excellent ham on bun, spicy sausage and BBQ hot wings. I believe that Bryant's has the best burnt ends, ribs, pork, and the tastiest/moist turkey. Jackstack's and Gate's beans are superb, and Jackstack even breaks ranks with the untraditional fare of BBQ trout, salmon and shrimp, but unless you are bored, stick with the meat that had legs at one time. LC's has great pork as well, but if you are in the mood for fries, skip them and go to Bryant's for the freshest, brownest mountain of spuds around. Chances are, if they do not serve Red Cream Soda, or at the very least, Boulevard Beer to wash it down with, it is not one of the old KC standbys. If you are still hungry enough for desert, the easiest choice is a "yammer" pie from gates which is also small enough to fit in your pocket for later! God I miss KC!
